Outside of Tyler we have Hughes Plant Farm. I guess they're the biggest that are close to me. Believe me, they have EVERYTHING and their prices are good. We also have Blue Moon near Edom. This one has been in Southern Living several times and will have things you don't see anywhere else. They're also kinda pricey, which is to be expected. It's a delight just to walk around there, and sometimes that's all you can afford to do!

Another Place In Time in the Heights is my favorite. They always have unusual tomatoes and gingers. Buchanans is nice but seems "corporate", ie. they sell plants "by" people, like P. someone smith, or Martha Stewart...yuck. The sales people are not nice either.
Jerry's Jungle on his open days is another favorite.His help is amazing too. He and his pal Merrill are the nicest.
I will also second Arbor Gate. Joshua'Natives in the heights is neat to, except he smokes on you while you are looking at plants, and I don't care for that.
A new place we just tried that I love ( they have huge water plants selection) is The Backyard Gardner.April and her partner Jim are great to talek to and their help is lovely.I'll post my opinion on ARE on that link..it is not good.

The only good nursery we have found in the Killeen-Temple-Belton area is Sweetbriar Nursery on FM 2271 in Belton. The web site has directions, and also a plant availability list. If you search on Sweetbriar Nursery, the web site will come up. Sweetbriar specializes in natives, with some adapted plants. The prices are reasonable, and if the owners are in a good mood, the advice and information is invaluable.

I would take you to the Natural Gardener, The Great Outdoors and Barton Springs nursery

In my area, there are many I haven't actually visited this year, but two of my favorites are Hartwell's and Lantana Gardens.

Janie, if you come to the Houston area, be sure to go to Maas Nursery in Seabrook.

Regarding Houston area nurseries, I agree about Maas. I love it there. And I also agree about Another Place in Time. I love going to Buchanan's Native Plants. They have expanded and I just love it there. I can always find what I'm looking for and MORE!

In Victoria I agree about Earthworks. I really like it there.

In Corpus Christi I suggest Turner's Gardenland, Gill Nursery and Fox Trees.

I second the Blue Moon in Edom. Pricey, yes, but definitely worth the trip for sightseeing if nothing else.

We have Rainbow Gardens (there's a website somewhere for it too..) and The Garden Center here in San Antonio. I love Rainbow the best, my 5yr dd and I go out there and sit on one of their swings out by the fountains and pond beneath the trees and just lounge.

In Fort Worth you cannot beat Westons. They are a bit pricey but totally organic and have stuff that's hard to find. It has a lovely garden across the way of the old estate that used to be a party house! They've rehabed the area and it's really neat. The employees tend to be very helpful. Each of them seems to have a specialty in plants they are very knowledgeable about.Weston's set up really cute and very relaxing. Big selection of a lot of types of plants suited to TX. Stegall's is less pricey and up the way a bit. You get what you pay for tho. There is good selections but you should know what you're looking for. Also, they keep a rather large dobie that will "greet" you enthusiastically. If you're afraid of dogs this might be a problem!

In the Dallas area, I love Rohde's (Garland), North Haven Garden (75/Royal Lane), and Shades of Green (Frisco). For trees and shrubs, you can't beat Covington's (Rowlett). And once a year I visit Blue Moon in Edom. As others have said, it's worth the drive just to walk around and marvel at everything. If I could only pick one nursery, it would be Rohde's, though. The owners are very friendly and knowledgeable, are into organics and native plants, and are cat people. They stock one brand of cat food that I can't find anywhere else in the area.

I agree with Janie, The Enchanted Forest in Richmond Rosenberg is the most beautiful nursery.... It is really awesome. A couple months ago, Southern Living Magazine had an article on their ten best Garden Centers in Texas. I don't remember all of the nurseries , but some of them were:::; Buchanans and Teas in the Houston area, Blue Moon Gardens near Tyler, North Haven gardens in Dallas, Wildseed Farms in Fredricksburg ?? , anursery in Wichita Falls, a nursery in Lubbock and a couple of others I can't remember. I have been to Teas, Buchanans, Blue Moon Gardens and North Haven Gardens and they are all good, but nothing compared to The Enchanted Forest.

Natural Gardener is my favorite in Austin. I could live out there!

Blue moon is my fav, I too go to look at their display gardens, then on the way home stop at two nurseries by the airport (Bredlove (which has display gardens), and something else-Harris maybe), then Chamblee's Rose a Roma; I love North Haven; and am going to try out Rhodes in Garland (when I go to Dallas its on my way home); also some of the San Antonio nurseries (we are goin there sometime this year) thanks for the list guys.

I'll second michellesg regarding Rainbow Gardens. I've been in San Antonio nearly three years, and since I found RG on Thousand Oaks I haven't been to any other places.

In Bay City there is a small nursery called Myra's Garden. She has a lot of real pretty display gardens and a real neat gazebo that I would like to have3.

Myra's Garden is wonderful too! I love to go there, and she does a lot of classes on Saturdays, too.

I want to start driving and just make a large trip around the state, going to nurseries. My kind of vacation.

Metro Maples in FT Worth is a great great place to get maple trees (all kinds including japanese, shantung,etc).

Lowes and Home Depot are not so good... ;)

Well, there's no place like The Antique Rose Emporium, near Brenham.
But since that's so far, I like North Haven Gardens in Dallas, on Northaven, between Central Expressway and Hillcrest.

Have you been to the The Antique Rose Emporium this year?
I was there a few weeks ago. It has gone downhill in the past couple of years.
Nothing has been pruned, diseased plants everywhere.
Looks like they lost the employees whom knew what they were doing.
I only say this so someone else will not make a special trip there to only be disappointed as I did.

No one has mentioned King's Nursery in Tenaha, TX. It's in the phone book, if you are ever in the area. Also, Naconiche Gardens, outside of Nachidoches, TX. Both are great and have plants that are hard to find. King's is very inexpensive. Naconiche has great display gardens. They are both along 59 in between Marshall and Nachidoches.

What makes a nursery great? FANTASTIC customer service, FRIENDLY knowledgeable salespeople and GREAT selection.
I got all of that and more at Oak Hills Nursery in Hesperia CA. Living in a desert climate Lake Mathews, Riverside County I have searched extensively for shade trees and plants that are California natives and will thrive in my climate zone.

Some nursery had great selections but the sales people were not knowledgeable about California natives or just became abrupt when armed with my Sunset Garden Bible, I asked more detailed questions about certain plants i.e. extensive root system, litter, rabbit resistant. Oak Hills has 7 acres of plants suited for the desert and Shannon the resident horticulturist was able to give me detailed information on EVERY plant on site. Not only that, she gave me a printout of all the plants in the nursery with the corresponding Sunset page. She gained a customer for life.
