Darwin was into worms too. You can download, for four bucks, his opus on the subject at amazon. I've had some fun watching an introduced worm species - some enormous night crawler - move around my 3 acres, a process thats taken 10 years to reach the limits and cross an earthen pond dike. They'd discovered some ecological niche / food supply that the local worms hadn't been exploiting to its full max, so here they came. A shovel full of dirt would have a dozen of these things in it, and then when they'd eaten what ever it was, the number was down to 1 or two, and the local worms were back.

I guess my question now is, pollen being an issue, does this include such things as non-invasive varieties of honeysuckle and other non invasive varieties of invasive plants? The cross pollination issue comes into play when you have a plant that is "sterile" like the 'Bradford' pear. It became "fertile" when it got cross pollinated. You have other plants that are not invasive, not because they are sterile, but because their seeds don't germinate well here or they do but they can't take the heat/cold/some other factor. That is why some plants are invasive in other areas of the country and not here (and vice versa, not all of our invasives are pests up north). Usually, if a species of a particular plant is invasive (example of a species would be Lonicera maackii), the potential for it to be invasive is passed down to any "relatives" (such as Lonicera x bella which has L. maackii as a parent); the invasiveness might not show up right away but might need time or age (or a partner) to do so. And some plants are not invasive to the homeowners eye (such as rampant spreading) but quietly spread seeds thanks to the birds. New plants pop up, no one destroys them and the spread continues as they mature. By the way, plagio - I second the recommendation for a Tea Olive, it has wonderful fragrance.

Around my area, varieties that come to mind include Ox Eye daisy, Catmint, common blue violet, Feverfew, Ribbon grass, Snow on the Mountain, Vinca, and Queen Anne's Lace. Of these, I find Snow on the Mountain and the common blue violet to be the worst. Snow on the Mountain can take years to remove without using herbicide. The violets spread by rhizomes as well as literally launching lots of seeds out of pods - out of control in some areas here, has gotten into the lawn and is naturally resistant to the popular lawn herbicides. I don't like using herbicides anyways so I finally gave up and I just ignore and mow them now. Of all true invasives by definition, European Buckthorn is hands down the most evil thing I have ever encountered and had to deal with. It is so pervasive that I have given up trying to eradicate it from my woods. It is a wasted exercise because nobody else around me attempts to eradicate them from their property so I could never succeed even if I tried. Birds love the berries and greedily devour them, thus spreading the seeds everywhere.

They are everywhere and nowhere! The ungnome is always a potential threat, so always look very closely at what you think is a gnome for anything suspicious....

That is scary stuff and I bet mine hitched a ride from Carrie's, I guess we have to check our cars like we do boats to make sure invasive plants aren't hanging on

I found three that have invaded my yard! And all looking so innocent in the daytime. Little did I know how invasive they are until alerted by Jim.

Some of them do carry shovels, so that may be it. I thought all those little holes were armadillos. Could it be they escape from the neighbor's yard at night?

Thanks for the warning, too late I'm afraid. They survived hurricane Ike and the freeze. One has climbed onto the porch. I barely made it out of Lowes the other day, several tried to leap into my cart but I evaded them.
