Invasive Species @ the Pond

I've been up at my dad's in AR for the past couple of months. While I've been gone a new critter arrived at the pond and I guess by the number of beer and wine bottles I picked up they have been partying since I left.

The Devil's Tadpoles? If this is a motorcycle club Mr. D. Hopper must a poser or he got a DUI because I don't see a motor on that trike.

I've been having problems with the free lunch cats partying in the garage too. I've been cussing them for knocking over the plastic garbage can for the last few days and helping themselves to the cat food bag. Yesterday I had to apologize to them when I caught the real culprit leaving the scene of the crime.

Trike and Frog built with 100% recycled and found parts.

Trike: Yamaha frame and forks, bicycle seat, planter wheels, irrigation pipe, and misc. steel.

Frog: Air tank, shovel, rebar, push rods, exhaust pipe, steel water pipe, and misc springs.

I to have a mud bottom pond and this is what I have done. I do have the pond stocked with 8 large koi and an assortment of goldfish. The pond is 100x55 feet and about 8 ft. deep in the middle. Waterlilly will not grow in the deeper areas only the shallow. The koi do indeed root them as well as prune them constantly keeping them in check. In fact after digging the pond I had wild cattails popping up all over and was concerned they would take over but the koi have actually uprooted a high percentage of them as well. Pickeral weed along the edges has been added and the small fry love that to hide in. I have also added lots of yellow flag in shallow waters and that's doing great. good luck.

What your describing sounds like Parrots Feather, Anacharis/elodea, Cabomba or hornwort. They are all invasive.

I have a bog of Louisiana irises that I clear out every three or four years. While in bloom, I dig what I want to save. I pot them and put them in wading pools. With what is left over, if nobody offers to dig them, I spray the remaining ones with Roundup. I have to spray several times because little shoots start up. I spray those little increases. By late August, 99% are dead and the bog is dry enough to till. I run my John Deere through the bog several times and grind up what is left of the rhizomes. Usually, I wait until November to unpot the ones I saved. No LA I have ever grown has been invasive in the sense of pseudacorus. BLACK GAMECOCK increases too quickly here and I no longer have it. FLARE-OUT is another that increases too quickly. Clumps get massive but they do not travel. James Faith, a newer one, is quite a grower, too, but nothing like BG. Then, there are some that don't grow, like the imports. Sometimes I don't always deadhead everything and a chance seedling will show up. This year, one stood head and shoulders above all of the others. It looked like a gigantic Dutch iris. It had rather narrow parts but the standards stood up like a TB's during the entire time the flower was in bloom. I saved it to enjoy. Hi Damp, Ta for info. I did see this on TV and I have Floating Pennywort in my pond. I was given some years ago and the only other place I've seen it is on the River Wandle in south London, which is the river they showed on TV. It's obviously spread over the years and is now a problem there. I also have red stemmed Parrots Feather, which I bought from an aquatic centre some years ago. I really like it because it's very pretty and the fish and frogs use it to hide in. The birds also love to sit on it and have a bath. They use the feathery ends as a loofah! Sermon taken on board! Have digested all the tips about thinning out and composting, as well as getting rid of pond water on the garden, rather than down the grid. Big Kid

Welcome back Jack! I've been wondering where you were! LOVE the new creation! He is just too cool! Do you do your own painting....the logo on his back? If so, you have quite the talent my friend. What an awesome trike he has too!

And the poor cats have been taking all the blame...glad you caught the real culprit!

The javelina is cute. Are they fierce?
We used to have wild boar that escaped from a private game park. They were scarey.

Well, looks like you need to stay away from home more often! Esp if you get 'partiers' like these two...you may even have to send out a 'search & rescue' party to make sure there's no brawls at your place!

Too cool, tinfoilhat! It looks like the party was at your house,huh? I won't be surprised if the cats get together and form their own gang to go after that javelina for filching their food. I like how Harvey is walking so calmly away from the scene of the crime. Love D. Hopper and little Squiggy! Great logo for D. Hopper's motorcycle gang too. Keep those pictures coming of the party animals at your place! You da man!

No javelinas, but I have raccoons and 'possums stealing my cat food!
No frogs having parties either--just people driving by and throwing bottles out.
I will possibly have MORE trash because a Raceway service station is being built just 20 feet from my house and garden.......
