A Tale of Two Bugs: Good? bad?
Comments (4)Bless, greenhaven! you're actually trying to figure out if that bad muncher is worth keeping in that it may turn out to be some butterfly! Well, hope someone can help ID.... Speaking of which Greenhaven, I saw a beautiful dragonfly (must be thriving because of those mosquitos) and a few delicate and pretty butterflies (I love their blue spots and patterns)in my garden. I do have to admit their larvae may be contributing to the holes in my leaves besides that annoying grasshopper that I keep chasing with my hot wax pepper spray when it gets closer to the perfume zone. But at least they leave my blossoms pretty much alone; they're the only things I care about in terms of holes....See MoreGood news, good news and bad news.
Comments (8)One thing, I'd hope you remember--medical science has advanced by leaps and bounds since your dd was a child. I know, even with a procedure my DH had about 5 years ago, and had to have repeated this year, there was vast improvement. I'd be willing to bet that the treatment today is better and hopefully more effective than what you were told many years ago. Wishing your daughter the best. As to your other news--Fantastic, the very best to you and your children....See MoreBats in your garden....good or bad?
Comments (7)There was a lot talk/news about encouraging bats around the yard when West Nile first starting showing up in Dallas. Here's a good DMN article from that time: Don’t depend on bats to control West Nile mosquitoes. The gist was that the most common bats in Texas can be good for controlling moths and beetles, but we'd be better off encouraging dragonflies to impact the mosquito population.... and that opportunistically dining bats can potentially eat a lot of dragonflies. There use to be some evening bats (like yours?) we enjoyed watching fly around over our yard at dusk, but they must have lost their habitat since have not seen them for the past few years. They are neat critters that I'd welcome in the yard, but neutral on encouraging them since they dine on both pests and beneficials. Though imagine any guano would be good for the garden....See MoreSept. OBF: Bugs - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
