What about palms?
Unfortunately most palms that grow under or very close to the high voltage power lines will have to be removed. Because of the way palm trees grow they cannot be trained to avoid our lines like other trees. In this situation Nevada Power will cut the palm close to the ground at our own expense as a courtesy to our customers.

I'm so sorry to hear about this, but since every lot has an easment for utilities - you probably won't have many options for recourse. Agian - I'm so sorry for you. It is so sad to grow something and watch it for years and in just a few minutes it is distroyed.

Thanks all. I have calmed down... a bit. After I got to thinking, I thought...you know these trees are such an expense for us to always trim. 300 bucks at least twice a year. They are taller than my house, so now all you see is trunk. They will have to come down at some point I guess.
I wish instead of cutting, I could give them to a garden place.
So I guess I will let the power co. pay to take them down...and the money I saved having to do that, I will buy shorter palms.
These palms were one of the reasons we fell in love with this house. So it is so hard to say goodbye.

Yummy, that just makes my blood boil. It's so wrong that you have to have them removed if they aren't a problem. Aren't neighbors great? bah. Have you checked to see if anyone would want to deal with the expense of digging them up? Best wishes to you.

Nurseries will by big bucks for them. Check around.
I have a friend in Kingsville. About one a year someone stops by to see if she wants to sell hers.

Eleven years ago when we moved here, the light company trimmed my big palm out front to where there was only one frond left. I was so upset, but it came back, and it is now taller than the electric lines.

And just to let you know, it really isn't necessary to trim up palms twice a year. I have around 20 palms which I get trimmed only every 2 to 3 years. Many of those brown fronds that look dead are still supplying nourishment to the tree, so it is beneficial to keep them on for some time rather than cutting them everytime a brown frond shows up. Remember the palm is a monocot, basically a big blade of grass, so the constant trimming is not recommended.

Before you let them cut down your palms, you might want to contact the Texas Forest Service to see if they can tell you what your legal rights are. Also you might want to contact the City of Spring along with your power provider to see if you can get some additional information. When you call, ask for someone in management that can give you correct information.

I agree that big palms are worth mucho denero. But can you delay the power company long enough to find a buyer? If they are too close to power line the landscapers maybe be reluctant to take on the liabilty. Depending on type of palm the price could be a 100-500 dollars so it would be worth looking into and then get new plants with the proceeds. How high are power lines? Pindo palms won't exceed 15 feet over a 20-40 year lifespan and is the only feather palm with good cold hardiness.
I am sorry for your probable loss but hopefully you can make a tall cool glass of wine from what would otherwise be sour grapes.

Could you move them away from the power lines? If you like them could you put them in front? It would cost something, but they can be moved. Second option is to sell them. They cost a bundle and there is high demand for them in new, high end developments.
