How big a hole for new tree?
Comments (10)hey the more you learn.. the less you know ... you dont mention where you are.. or your zone.. or your soil type ... might help in the info you receive ...... in my pure yellow sand ... i am of the opinion ...that the hole doesnt need to be all that big ... in spring.. i can stick my hand 6 inches into the soil ... so what use would be all that extra digging ... so i do no more than double ... you need that much for proper movement ... and i NEVER amend .... clay is the opposite.. and i would move .. lol .. in fact that was the number one priority when i bought this house... but there are other experts if you have clay .... dig new hole first ...unpot... snip or uncoil roots that circle .. get it in the hole.. refill half way .. fill hole with water... in sand or loam ... refill soil 3/4 ... tamp settle the soil in there ... little more water ... complete the refilling.. tamping with foot... mulch.. and water again when your finger says it needs water ... and no sooner ... with proper watering after planting.. i am nearly of the opinion that it doesnt matter how you plant it [again.. but for clay] ... just do it.. and water it properly for two years ... trees are very forgiving if they have the water they need ... ken...See MoreJade tree getting too big to fit through doors...
Comments (16)Ralleia, Hello fellow Omahan! Looks like you should be a member of our local C&S club! That's a massive Jade for sure. I keep mine small by not moving them up to bigger pots for the same reason - small house, not enough room for a "tree". They'll stay compact and smallish if you keep them pruned back and in a smaller pot. Is yours a hugely branched single trunk? If there are a whole lot of smaller plants in the same pot, I'd remove all the smallest ones and go back to a single-trunked plant. You'd end up with a smaller plant, smaller pot, and something more manageable, and lots to give away. (I have a neighbor who asks for plant donations every year in the fall for a festival at Holy Cross... another idea of how to get rid of the excess...) Once you do this, you can shape it up and keep it a reasonable size by some yearly strategic pruing of both foliage and roots. Comments (6)I agree with Weissman. I had a friend who had no duct at all. She hired an HVAC guy to install ductwork by opening her drywall, installing the 8" duct between the studs (or was it the joists?) (just barely fit, she told me), and cutting a hole to the outside, including the damper. While it sounds like a big deal, she told me that in the end, actually it wasn't. She was lucky to have an empty soffit above her cabinets, and also did not have a long distance to the outside, about 6'. She says she is so glad she did it. The cost (she was surprised it wasn't so much) and any aggravation are long forgotten, but meanwhile she will have years of enjoyment from cooking with her hood and good ductwork. Of course it depends on each home and its setup, but you could at least look into it....See MoreHow many 12 gauge romex cables allowed through 3/4' hole?
Comments (9)Groundrod's post is alarmist. There is NO concern with anything less than five "cables". Yes, two (2-wire) cables, or more accurately four conductors, require derating, but this is NOT an issue when we are talking about 9 conductors or less of size #10, #12 & #14. We use the 90 deg C column for derating and nine or less uses a 70% derating. Even this 70% is no less than the typical ampacity for these size wires. This is due to 240.4(D). IMO this type of thing is not even worth mentioning and only serves to confuse non-trade folks. Why bother saying two cables needs derating when the bottom line ampacity numbers DO NOT change. Also, groundrod, can you tell us where you see ANY reference to fire or draft stopping with regard to derating. I see no such notations. Cables simply passing through holes DO NOT require derating....See Morecatherinet
