How big a hole for new tree?

I am ready to plant a new dogwood tree and am confused about the size of the hole needed. I know the old standard is to make the hole about twice the diameter of the dirt ball ( to allow the roots to grow in looser soil), but I read where it might be better to make the hole about the size of the ball. The reasoning is that the roots will grow more aggresively in compacted soil. The article said that with the large hole, the roots may just keep growing in the softer soil and stay more confined instead of branching out into surrounding soil. Any thoughts?
