Is salvia 'mystic spires' the same color as 'indigo spires'
Comments (2)They are the same color. However, Mystic Spires has a different form than Indigo Spires. Indigo is a far laxer, more sprawling plant which always needs staking. Mystic's form is like its other parent, farinacea, except bigger. Mine get about two to two and a half feet high and about eighteen inches wide. Also, the blooms of Mystic are like farinacea's in form. Indigo Spires blooms never seem to end. Mystic's do end, but retain their blue color even as they dry. I deadhead to keep them coming. I have had Mystic Spires for three years now and they are, hands down, my favorite salvia. They bloom early (already blooming here) and don't quit till frost. They never need staking, and bounce back very fast after cutting back. Although I always have a few that overwinter, I take cuttings in the late fall, just in case. They root easily. I overwinter them in my unheated basement under lights. Rarely lose even one....See MoreSalvia 'Mystic Spires' - Summer heat report?
Comments (8)4" plants are usually fairly sturdy here, Westelle. We don't get the horrendous heat that you do in Fresno. I really wasn't saving them til fall planting. I had plans on planting them, but I've just been extremely lazy in the garden this year for some reason. I just don't seem to be able to make my mind up and spend more time procrastinating than doing any actual gardening/planting. Might not be a bad idea to stick them in gallon containers while I'm procrastinating. Maybe I'll procrastinate about that for a while......LOL...See MoreMystic Spires Blue
Comments (8)This has suddenly become available in garden centres in the UK. The plants have originated from Holland. (Surprise?) Certainly the foliage is like that of the lovely 'Indigo Spires' but I am highly suspicious that this plant is an artificially dwarfed 'Indigo Spires'. May be fine in the first year, but may revert to the size of the ungainly hybrid next year??? We must just try it and see. Last year I was in Holland and saw on sale 12 inch flowering plants of S. guaranitica 'Black and Blue', known in the USA as 'Costa Rican Blue'. They looked great, BUT had been treated with a chemical to reduce the size. The one I bought soon reached the normal height of 6 ft. All the small S. splendens have been treated accordingly, the true species being up to 3 metres tall. Cheers, and happy holidays, Robin....See MoreMystic Spires Blue Salvia
Comments (3)If you want blue flowered sages to attract hummers in Florida, I'd go with the various forms of S. guaranitica. These include the old S. ambigens form from Brazil, Blue Ensigh, Argentina Skies (light blue), Black & Blue (dark calyxes and a deeper blue), the giant Costa Rican form (which might be a hybrid), and the newer Van Remsen form, which is a superb performer in Houston and San Diego. All of these are more of a Delft or cobalt blue. For true blue, try S. cacaliaefolia or one of the S. macrophylla forms. S. patens likes more Mediterranean conditions. S. sagittata is superb, but is finicky in hot humid weather. There are some promising new hybrids between S. sagittata and S. macrophylla that are being trialled this year....See Moresally2_gw
