my tomato plants suck. they really do. encouragement?

Basically, my attempt to grow tomatoes by seed can be summed up by one word: failure.

I planted my little expensive heirloom seeds in soil-less mix and avoided damping off by some magical power of the tomato gods. I transplanted them to larger containers...all the while keeping the gigantic light (compared to my teeny tiny dorm room at least) about two inches from the tops of the plants...the whole time noticing their dwarf like size. (in fact, i posted about this earlier).

Well finally about a week ago I figured I should go ahead and plant them out if I ever wanted to see an edible tomato, even though they were only about 4 inches tall.

Now they're little brown stems of absolute FAILURE, as I mentioned above.

And yes, I hardened them off.

Someone please tell me the moon dance I need to perform at midnight or the concoction I need to drink during the solstice to get some home grown tomatoes. I'm feeling defeated.
