what's this black and white bird - photo

Anyone know what this is? I keep seeing it at Sonic walking around the parking lot and the grassy area around the lot. Finally got a picture of it.

Wow. I have no idea what it is. At first, I thought it had a really big beak.....but I think that's part of the weeds behind it. I'm not familiar with this bird. Maybe it's a pet? Maybe it's a variation on some usual kind of bird. Maybe it's a juvenile? How big was it? Have you tried posting it on the Birding forum? Very interesting!

Thanks Don for letting me know which photos are your favorites. I know it's all in the eye of the beholder, but I like hearing other people's opinions. Photo #5 is Abiqua Drinking Gourd. I'm not that much into cupped hosta, but I think this hosta is special. Your black and white photo is beautiful! I, like Jo, am wondering which hosta that is. candler, Back in the Win 95 era I bought a flat bed UMAX scanner. Really a good unit and came with Adobe Photo. The UMAX wouldn't work on the 98 system and I went through a couple scanners and ended up with an Epson 2480. In the meantime, I had I purchased Abobe Photo Delux Home Edition 4. It is the best of 4 or 5 software imaging packages I've tried. I finished scanning black and white family photos for the years 1916 to 1966 just before Christmas. Not really difficult, just time consuming. If you spend a little time learning your software you'll be surprized what it can do. For example, half of a B&W photo is in shade. So, with your image software you trace the shaded portion to define the working area and then begin to lighten and increase the contrast until it matches or comes close to the unshaded area. Creases in the photo can be overpainted with the clone function. Select the color or pattern at the crease and use that to paint over the crease. And the list goes on. It is astounding what can be done. Some will tell you that if the detail is not in the photo then there's nothing that can be done to enhance it. Don't believe it. I have copied eyes from one photo and pasted into another; change portions of the background that contain farm equipment or the neighbors dog. Get a decent scanner with a decent speed. Nothing is so frustrating as waiting for the thing to do what its supposed to do. Use the image software that comes with it and if it won't do what I've described, go to plan B. Hang in there. Its a wonderful project you're starting. Bob Central Arizona.

I just voted. I was getting cross-eyed--I've looked at these pics so many times. I liked so many of them.I wanted to vote for one where someone had tried a new technique.I wanted to vote for one with beautiful quilting (I'm weak in that area and I envy anyone that can do it ),I wanted to vote for one that appealed to me visually. I even wound up giving each one points for different aspects--detail, originality, visual appeal,etc. Then last night I thought, well, if I was given a choice of keeping one for myself--which would I choose? Made up my mind, went to vote and changed my mind again. LOL. I wish I could have had at least three votes!! Anyway, I've voted. I just wanted to say that this has been really enjoyable and if there's another challenge I'll join in. Everyone did such a great job. Clap yourselves on the back. ~Geraldine

One of the best gifts we can give to our daughters is an introduction to Audrey Hepburn. Buy the old movies and watch them together with your girls. When mine were in high school a lot of the fights over "fashion" or appropriate clothes were settled when I asked them, "What would Audrey Hepburn wear?" You'll never regret spending time with these old movies and this beautiful star.

was it walking or hopping? My guess is that you have yourself either a grackle or a robin with a touch of partial albinism....
leaning more towards the grackle at this point...

Dirtgirl - I think it was looking for french fries so Grackle would make sense. Two other people suggested a partial albino Grackle in the Bird Watching forum and posted almost at the same time you did. I can't remember if it was walking or hopping but it spent quite a bit of time on the ground. I've always seen it by itself, not with other birds. I'll keep my camera with me. It was still hanging around there yesterday. Maybe I can get another shot.

Hey Dirtgirl.....sounds like you and the couple of people on the birdwatching forum may have guessed it! I've never seen an albino or partial albino anything. My brother in Minnesota has an albino squirrel in his yard!

can you identify any of its calls? it reminds me of a grackle as well. or magpie? i dont' know anything about them since we have none in my area.

I just had a full albino grackle in my yard TODAY! I was so excited to see this post, I joined the site. (I don't know how to upload pics yet, but I got quite a few) I even got a couple being fed by momma!

Dydee - Welcome to Gardenweb! Congrats on getting the photos. It's unusual to see an albino bird, much less photograph it. There are some interesting photos if you look on Google's images feature. There's an albino peacock that's beautiful.

If you're wanting to learn how to post photos, you can find lots of helpful info by searching on gardenweb. A lot of people use Photobucket.

It worked for me. Really cool that you got a photo of it being fed. That leaves no doubt as to what kind of bird it is. Here's a discussion in the bird watching forum.
