Peren.all, I agree with you about keeping the posts coming. I am missing the flurry of activity in this forum already.

Probably my favorite photo of the bunch is the first one. Most of you will have recognized it---Touch of Class. I find it to be photogenic and just a lovely hosta. If you don't have it, consider getting one!

Gorgeous - 2nd pic is my favourite - there is just something about the lighting in that one - and the heart shape just pops...

Remind me again why we don't start the Alphabet now? It seems we all suddenly have time on our hands...for some reason... :(

I, too, am ready for the Alphabet game. But I think that some of the regular submitters to the forum are not here at present. That would mean they would miss the game. Maybe we could come up with something else to entertain us . . . hmmm . . . . what could that be?

Beverly: I agree that the variegated hosta do have a nice contrast to them in black and white.

Dgregory: That particular hosta is ADG. A mature specimen takes a nice picture in color and in black and white. My ADG is just a baby. I took this photo while touring a private garden.

Hostanista: Thanks Hostanista for finding the previous thread. There certainly are some great pictures there.

They are all amazing but I like the first and second the most. Love the heart shaped leaf. They are all frame worthy! :-)

WOW! Love all of them, NewHostaLady, but the 1st is my fave. Never considered taking B&W's of Hostas. Great idea.

HostaTakeover: I cannot take credit for the idea to do black & white photos. It was here on the forum that Mac showed us some of his photos, and I just loved them. Perhaps you will join us in displaying your B&W photos sometime?

I love the B &W shots. The 2nd from last might be my favorite. And DD, your sterling silver hosta, boy would that look good in a narrow silver frame.

Most of my frames are now the narrow gallery style frames. Except I have some which are white and very frou-frou a la cottage style, and I'm hoping to find a way to use them AFTER the major work of this remodel is done. That is when I will begin moving furniture around. It's been a long time since I hung any pictures, they are all packed up. I'd like to cover a whole wall with shots of the garden, hosta and spanish moss and my garden paths. I'll have to write about a stroll through the garden in the winter. No snow here. No tippy canoes this year if I can help it. I found about 30 baskets at Dollar Tree which will be pressed into service shortly. I'm going to kill one of the pecan trees this winter, and have it taken down piece by piece. Since I discovered that my problem is not shade in the summer but shade in the winter, what do I need that pecan tree for anyway.....

Pecans. Just saying.

And I like the pic posted at 0:45 best, but it took a long time to pick a favorite, they're all so good.

Thanks Kathy. The one you chose as best is Abiqua Drinking Gourd. It goes to show that even though variegated hosta seem to offer the best contrast for black and white, hosta with a lot of corrugation can be very interesting as well. I will post some other pictures another time which will include ADG in color. I think a mature ADG is quite photogenic!

I'm sitting here, sipping coffee, looking at this past year's photos when I came across my B & W album. Imagine my surprise when I discovered two photos in b&w! They were too good to pass up so I thought I'd share. I still can't believe Marilyn Monroe! Plantaginea definitely looks gilded.

Jo, I am glad you found your black and white photos and shared them. The Marilyn Monroe photo is fantastic. Goes to show that it isn't only variegated hosta that look best in black and white.

hostatakeover , for the life of me I had to look it up and it is Antioc. I had another Myrle gave me when I was just starting and this one came up as a really good buy so had to have another. I get so many compliments on these and seem to just keep looking better and better.
Thank you for the compliment newhostalady on my waterfall area. It was put in late October a year ago and was fortunate enough to find some large plants plus move a few others into this area to make it look established so I could add the smaller ones I purchase to fill between. The two areas on each side had been there before and the ones to the right was to be my first and last of my hosta gardens that Mctavish started me and then got hooked on hosta.

Faye---I just knew that your waterfall area would look fantastic in color---it certainly does! Very impressive. Love the rockery, plants and Japanese Maple!

Jo All of your pics are sooo nice. Yes, M.M. is a real standout but p's flowers were so camera ready I can almost catch their fragrance.

Peren.all, I am glad that this thread has opened your eyes to the beauty of B&W photography. That's exactly what happened to me when another hosta forum member posted black and white photos.

I have noticed that the black and white photos bring out different elements than the color photos do. It makes you see something that you did not notice before, and I think that is the beauty of black and white. Perhaps you'll give it a try sometime?

NHL, I have become a fan of your photography. You asked if we had a favourite of the ones you posted. I cannot choose as they all are amazing in their own way! I was very late finding this thread but I'm glad I did.

Photo #5 is Abiqua Drinking Gourd. I'm not that much into cupped hosta, but I think this hosta is special.

Your black and white photo is beautiful! I, like Jo, am wondering which hosta that is. It is definitely a great choice for black and white photography.

Jo, yes my friend, That is indeed Lakeside Kaleidoscope. Here is the color shot for reference. It just has so many shades intertwining all over it, thought it would be a perfect subject for a B & W glamour shot : )

That, indeed, is a glamour shot in b & w! It's a beauty in colour but the black and white version COMPELS you to just stare at it and appreciate all the markings... it is so striking. Very beautiful.

Those emerging leaves in the first one uploaded today, NHL, that is breathtaking! Your camera has great contrast, good blacks and good highlights. The last one has white sparkle amidst the water drops.

Now, how do you know we all love pictures with drops! :)

No b & w here, but sepia. This Gosan Sunproof photo taken on 2014 11-16 has a look of vanilla cream here. Yummy.
