is this a dumb idea?

No doubt another brilliantly silly newbie idea.

I have a Sweet 100 doing its thing in my flower bed. One thick, very healthy branch is growing out from the main stem just about at soil level, which is probably not a good thing.

Today I noticed that it's starting to grow little root nubs where it touches the ground about 5 inches away from the stem. After that point it curves upward again.

So, would it make any sense at all to cover that part of the branch with soil to encourage it to root there? Will it just rot?

If that's the case, should I remove the branch entirely? It's about two foot long and nearly as sturdy as the main plant.

Or should I leave it where it is but slip something non-porous between the soil and this branch to avoid soil contact at all?
