I haven't had tremendous luck with them, but it's so easy to root stems in a cup of water that I get one every year anyway. I actually got one for my grandmother this year and snagged a few stems for myself. I just love the blooms!

I have a couple of them that are doing well. They didn't bloom the first year. Last year they had 2-3 little blooms. But this year they really put on a show. They have gotten about 25" long stems and are covered stem to stern with blooms. I even went so far as to yank out a bunch of larkspur growing up around them so I could see them. I have them on the north side of the house in full shade and planted in very sandy soil amended with compost. In the same bed I have an oak leaf hydrangea that's over 5' tall, some ferns, a echinacea (have no idea how that got in this bed), hydangea mycrophyla, rock rose, and a few other things whose names escape me now. But it seems to like that shady, sandy spot. Cheryl

Thanks Cheryl - that's encouraging. I was thinking of a northern exposure among some hellebores that only gets a tiny bit of early early morning sun. It's not sandy, it's very well ammended clay which reading up says they don't like. So, I'll try to ammend it some more and give it a shot there.
Missinformation - I'll take cuttings to root so if it doesn't survive I'll be able to try again in another location - or thinking positively to add to another location!

My only one that has survived but hasn't gone crazy with blooms is on the north side of the house, complete, total, full shade in a bed that was once prepped for azaleas - so the Dallas black gumbo mixed with pine mulch and lots of peat. It hasn't been there but for a few years, so maybe it just takes a few seasons to get good and happy. I stick the babies I start each year in pots, and they do well.

Missinfo, how do you root the cuttings? I'd like to start some more now that mine are getting large enough to take cuttings. Cheryl

They do seem to like their drainage. Point of advice, if it seems to die, leave the roots. I had one I was sure was dead, so I left it. It was gone for over a year. Then this spring, I raked up the mulch in that bed and what did I find? Under a foot of oak leaves, there's that bleeding heart, not only growing but BLOOMING! It's doing well now, much to my amazement. They're beautiful plants; I think I may try to propagate it so I can enjoy a few more!

I have 2 bleeding hearts that were planted last fall in a shady side of my house. One is huge and doing extremely well. The other one started leafing out and then I noticed the leaves are beginning to turn yellow and curl up. Is this normal; should I do something?

I consider them quite beautiful, but in DFW heat, too much work to grow.

That's what I thought, was so tempted to put them along a fence that is shady, but noticed a requirement is a fair amount of water - and I water on the lighter side. Some years it's only what falls from the sky.

Where did you find it? I've called about 6 different places and nobody has it.
