How to best perserve Dandelion roots
Comments (10)Chicory greens nutritional info in link. There's plenty nutrition to them too. From an herbalist's standpoint, they a bitter green like dandelions. And depending upon your line of herbalism (Western, TCM, Ayurvedic, etc.) there are uses for bitter foods in those schools of thought. And yes, the wild chicories that grow here (NY State) have much smaller leaves while the cultivated varieties grow some massively huge leaves in comparison. I should have taken a picture of some of the rossettes in the spring of some of the cultivated chicory varieties that grow wild around my vegetable garden - I let some go to seed a number of years back. Some of the rossettes were really huge. They are mostly blooming now - I love the blue blooms! Comments (5)Don't forget the dandelion wine! See link below. I think an organic lawn has an advantage in reducing dandelions because the PH tends to be neutral...dandelions prefer a PH of 7.5 or more. Taller stands of dense turfgrass help too. My neighbors have tons of those yellow darlings this year...yet I have only pulled about 20 with my weed hound so far this Spring. I do not use CGM or any other pre-emergent. I'm just not convinced that CGM prevents any weeds other than some crabgrass. CGM is also an expensive product that is not widely available in the market place. "IF" it were so good at weed control...I wager it would have been mass produced and marketed by the big box stores by now. While I do not doubt the sincerity of the CGM dandelion testimony I wonder if other factors are involved...I'm gonna keep an open mind on this one and reserving my judgment on the CGM/dandelion question. My weed hound is my way of dealing with the dandelion problem. Here is a link that might be useful: Dandelion Wine recipes...See MoreTrue rooting of a grafted (fruit) tree
Comments (1)Interesting, seems to defeat the traditional purpoe of grafting in the first place though. Where did you hear this?...See MoreKilling dandelions that are sharing rootspace with a Clematis.
Comments (7)I have decided to dig it up and move it. The dandelions roots and top growth are growing up through the middle of it so there is no way to smother it or pluck it out with a weed popper. It was a mis-named item that I bought at Wal-mart many years ago and this year I am going to take a picture of the flowers to see if I can identify it. It is a vitacella and a flower machine so I do not want to lose it. I transplanted it last year to where it is now and it done awesome and I got 2 long bloom periods so I will move it again and go through the roots and pull out the dandelions. What really iritates me to no end is I spend alot of money on my yard to keep it weed free and nice and my lovely neighbors let them weeds grow and flower, and to keep them out of my yard, I litteraly have to go over into their yard and weed when they are not home. Or when they go out there with a lawn mower once a month, millions of those seeds fly everywhere. They are lazy and I am glad they are moving....See MoreARiverRuns
