How to best perserve Dandelion roots

Hi, I picked and cleaned some dandelion roots today.

I would like to " perserve them" for use in a tea or maybe in a stir fry. Should I treat them like carrots? dry them or freeze them or will that cause them to lose their medical powers?

For tea or tincture use, clean, chop, and dry. It is time consuming to scrub all the dirt off and chop but the bounty is in your own yard and free for the taking.

You could make a tincture out of it. Freeze it - chop it fine - stick it in a clean jar and cover it with 100% vodka. Stick it in the cabinet for 3 months then strain the alcohol out into another clean dry bottle.

You could do an oil extract too. Same thing except don't freeze it - and you have to get the oil to the top of the jar (minimize air). Heat it a little in a pan of hot water. 6 weeks - then strain out oil.

Marathon comes in three varieties: Dwarf, dwarfier, and dwarfiest. I don't know of an easy way to tell one from another. You might ask the neighbors. It might come down to when it was installed. How often does she water? I'm 99% sure she waters daily because someone in SoCal has convinced even intelligent home owners that daily watering is the only way to go. In Orange County, west of the coastal mountains, you should be watering about once per month this time of year. In fact if you are getting rains now, then you don't need to water at all. You can spot spray dandelions and clover with a product like Weed-B-Gone. It is a foliar spray, not a soil drench. The main ingredient is a growth hormone that overstimulates the plant until it dies by using up all its reserve nutrients. It has no effect on grass. The best way to keep weeds out is to improve the density of the turf. Marathon only improves with more seed. But wait! Now is a horrible time to put out more seed. I would suggest nursing your way through this season and seeding in the fall. And I would further suggest that you steer away from Marathon and put in some Kentucky bluegrass. You are in one of the few areas of SoCal where you can get away with KBG. Here is a KBG lawn in northern Orange County. He hardly does anything to it except water every other week and apply used Starbucks coffee grounds when he gets enough. He hasn't used chemical fertilizer or herbicide in years. The owner is definitely not a lawn guy. This is his first lawn. All he does is what I told him about 10 years ago. The neighbors think he's a lawn genius.

Hey there It Better Be Organic, How hard is it to pull up a weed? If you have quack grass growing all around all your vegie gardens like I do, then I would estimate a couple lifetimes! I am smothering left and right, but have also been contemplating spraying vinegar to set it back a little bit. And when you have clay soil, you don't pull up weeds mostly, you DIG them up, and then try to get the dirt to let go of the roots. Takes a LONG time, and I always wind up with dirt in my eyes, hair, clothing, everywhere. It is depressing how vigorous my weeds are. The quack grass is even growing where I put down cardboard and woodchips last year around the raised bed, and goes under the sides into the raised beds. The long on-the-level garden is really being attacked this year. I think quack grass is a manifestation of the devil! It is worse than creeping charlie, and that's saying something. My goal is to put down cardboard and wood chips around every bit of garden, but that will take some time, and lots of maintenance. Marcia

Here's a recipe I tried once for dandelion wine. It turned out okay, a little syrupy, but fine. No one could really get over the ick factor of drinking something that had been sitting out on the counter for months, though. Dandelion Blossom Wine The late Edna Lewis was a Southern-cooking legend. She grew up in a small farming community in Virginia. In The Taste of Country Cooking (Alfred A. Knopf 1990), she wrote that in the very early spring, she would see her neighbors picking dandelions. For winemaking, she wrote, they had to be picked before noon. After that, the blossoms would close up tight. The wine was drunk at breakfast. This is adapted from her recipe. 1 gallon open dandelion blossoms 5 quarts boiling, noncarbonated water 3 1/2 pounds sugar Pick dandelion blossoms far away from polluted areas, in clear, open fields. Have at hand a good, clean stone crock or Pyrex container, because you will be pouring boiling water over the blossoms and a glass jar will crack and spoil your blossoms. Pick over the blossoms. See to it that there are no spiders or bugs in them. Rinse. Drop the blossoms into the crock and pour the boiling water over them. Cover with a clean white napkin and let stand for three days where it's not too cold. Strain through a thin, clean, odor-free cloth into a clean glass jar. Add the sugar and stir until the sugar dissolves. Cover again with a clean cloth and leave in the kitchen in a warm, draft-free place for three weeks. Then strain into clean, dry jars, filling up to the top. Tie a clean cloth over the mouth of each jar and leave to finish fermenting, which will take about four months, or until the wine stops being effervescent. Then strain carefully into clean bottles, leaving behind any sediment that settles on the bottom. Fill the bottles nearly full and cork tightly. Store in a dry, dark place.

How long a dandelion may take to regrow from a piece of root depends on how deep in the soil that root broke off. Sometimes you will see new growth in a week and other times maybe not for a couple of months. Between now and when you seed in the fall take a good, in depth, look at this soil. Have a good, reliable soil test done for pH, P, K, Ca, Mg, and the ratio between them and then use these simple soil tests to see what else you might need do to make that soil into a good, healthy soil that will grow strong and healthy plants that will be better able to crowd out any "weeds". 1) Structure. From that soil sample put enough of the rest to make a 4 inch level in a clear 1 quart jar, with a tight fitting lid. Fill that jar with water and replace the lid, tightly. Shake the jar vigorously and then let it stand for 24 hours. Your soil will settle out according to soil particle size and weight. A good loam will have about 1-3/4 inch (about 45%) of sand on the bottom. about 1 inch (about 25%) of silt next, about 1 inch (25%) of clay above that, and about 1/4 inch (about 5%) of organic matter on the top. 2) Drainage. Dig a hole 1 foot square and 1 foot deep and fill that with water. After that water drains away refill the hole with more water and time how long it takes that to drain away. Anything less than 2 hours and your soil drainsÃ¯Â¿Â½ too quickly and needs more organic matter to slow that drainage down. Anything over 6 hours and the soil drains too slowly and needs lots of organic matter to speed it up. 3) Tilth. Take a handful of your slightly damp soil and squeeze it tightly. When the pressure is released the soil should hold together in that clump, but when poked with a finger that clump should fall apart. 4) Smell. What does your soil smell like? A pleasant, rich earthy odor? Putrid, offensive, repugnant odor? The more organic matter in your soil the more active the soil bacteria will be and the nicer your soil will smell. 5) Life. How many earthworms per shovel full were there? 5 or more indicates a pretty healthy soil. Fewer than 5, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, indicates a soil that is not healthy.

For tea and stir fry a tincture would be unsatifactory at best. dry the roots thoroughly, if they are thick and big, cut them so they don't mildew. don't keep them im an airtight container. Sometimes I freeze my dried herbs to be sure of them not molding. Great stuff, dandelions. Good luck, Gloria

The "dandelion greens" sold in the supermarkets (at least in the US) are often chicory and not actually dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). I've grown the "dandelion" chicories (a Chicorium intybus variety) before and the leaves do look very similar to real dandelions and exactly like what you find in the supermarket.

Chicory greens nutritional info in link. There's plenty nutrition to them too.

From an herbalist's standpoint, they a bitter green like dandelions. And depending upon your line of herbalism (Western, TCM, Ayurvedic, etc.) there are uses for bitter foods in those schools of thought.

And yes, the wild chicories that grow here (NY State) have much smaller leaves while the cultivated varieties grow some massively huge leaves in comparison. I should have taken a picture of some of the rossettes in the spring of some of the cultivated chicory varieties that grow wild around my vegetable garden - I let some go to seed a number of years back. Some of the rossettes were really huge. They are mostly blooming now - I love the blue blooms!

Business? No, it's not my day job. But other than life-long learning about plants, I have taken classes from and apprenticed with a Naturopath. I've graduated from his program and while I am an herbalist, my interests lie more with the plants themselves: growing, harvesting, stewardship, wildcrafting, wild & native medicinals, and so on. Perhaps when I grow up someday "herbology" may be my business but not currently. ;)

I was looking a little closer at my store-bought "dandelion" leaves. I think you're correct. They don't have the milky juices of the dandelion and they taste a lot milder than dandelions.

Since you are more into botany than I am, I have a question for you. Can you get freshly harvested madder root? I use it along with other herb ingredients to remove congestion/stagnation of the uterus/liver/venous systems. The only madder root I was able to obtain was through companies that use it for dye. If used for dye, it can be many years old. But for herbology, it needs to be fresher in order to obtain the nutritional properties of it.

Please don't do this for internal use, else you might end up with botulism!

I make a tea of the whole plant and freeze it. This is antibiotic, as well as good for liver complaints. It works fine.
