Doing a google search on remontant hydrangeas, brought me to this thread. I own 'Wedding Gown' & 'Pistachio' or 'Glam Rock' as its known across the pond. Both hydrangeas do not get huge figure about 3' X 3'. 'Wedding Gown' I have noticed, in our zone 7 winters w/o protection dies almost to the ground and emerges with new growth in spring. The plant blooms on new wood. I have not encountered 'die to the ground' with 'Pistachio'. Both are well behaved in a Northern exposure and a Western exposure in the shadow of a magnolia.

Brendave - my personal opinion is don't even bother overwintering. What is the point? E.S. blooms on new wood. I have mentioned in other posts that I did an experiment last season - winter protected some E.S., did not winter protect others. The verdict? The *unprotected* E.S did better in terms of bush growth than the winter protected ones. They took a bit longer to get up and running, they died to the ground, but once they started growing - look out! In contrast, the winter protected ones did not die to the ground, and the leaf growth that came out got nipped by cold weather, and that set the plants back. They still bloomed, and I'd peg blooming about the same number of blooms, give or take a few. So why bother winter protecting when you have a plant that *does* produce plenty of new blooms on new wood? My opinion is - and I'm sorry if I ruffle some feathers here, but I've said it in other posts and it bears repeating - some folks are disappointed in their Endless Summer because they are expecting instant results. Bushes - any bush - take time to get established and reach full size and full blooming potential. BE PATIENT!!! You all will be rewarded when you Endless Summers get established. Keep in mind the rule of thumb for bush establishment is three years. Some may establish sooner, of course, perhaps after two full seasons in teh ground. Don't expect jaw-dropping displays before three full seasons in the ground. And, hey, if you do get the displays that everyone oooohs and aahhhs over before then, well, then - enjoy! :)

By "damage" I mean the larvae actually feeding off the roots and causing plant death. Very infrequent but it can happen. The cosmetic damage is a non-issue for me, especially with a deciduous shrub like a hydrangea. The nematodes will help but they are very expensive ($50 a pop), you have to get the timing of the application just right and it only solves half the problem. The nematodes have no affect on the adult weevils. They either need to be trapped or manually collected. And they will inevitably return as they reside in and around any wooden material - wood siding, fences, trees, sheds, wood mulch, forest litter, etc. It is impossible to get rid of them all. The notching of the leaves is far more unsightly on evergreen plant material (it is permanent) so I typically recommend to clients to observe the "10 foot rule".........site the plant so that the normal viewing distance is at least 10' away. The leaf damage will be almost unnoticeable. Insect pests feed on plant leaves. That is just one of the laws of nature. And the plants have survived for eons with that happening. Gardening is not a neat and tidy pastime - you correct or control what you can and learn to live with the rest.
