The Perfect Trees
Comments (20)Crazy how we try and plant things so perfectly, follow these documents and right ups. Are so afraid of root flare, planting to deep...when to water....when to fertilize....screen them...etc etc. Then you have trees growing out of stone. Reminds me at my house...I built a pretty elaborate raised vegetable bed. Spent about 1k on lumber, and dirt....added proper amendments, etc.... Behind my house their is a field...right in the middle of the field on top of some compost and rocks is a beautiful squash plant. It's like...really?...See MoreLooking for the *PERFECT* tree!
Comments (3)Hello Mindy(?), I also live in Las Vegas. Finding multitrunk trees is easy here but that ten foot width really narrows things down. Arizona Rosewood (Vauquelinia californica) is usually an evergreen shrub sort of like an oleander that can get to be a twenty foot tall bush but if pruned like a tree can be quite nice and more narrow than a mesquite or palo verde, evergreen and a good screen. It has attractive whitish flowers in the spring. Another possibility is the Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora). These don't get too wide and they have beautiful evergreen leaves, fragrant grape looking flowers in spring, and are not messy. The problem with them is they don't grow very fast so you would have to be patient. I've also seem quite a few bottle brush trees (Brachychiton populneus) around and they are evergreen, sort of poplar looking, and not really wide. I have heard complaints from some about thier boat shaped seed pods that have some hairy irritating stuff in them if you're not careful with them. Check these out and see what you think. Happy gardening, Maria...See MoreSearching for the Perfect Tree!
Comments (18)re: Unfortunately, about the only trees that are "fast growing" are trash trees. Not true. All three conifers I mentioned grow fast and not one is a trash tree IMHO. Granted, most trees that are considered shade trees are relatively slow. RE: Why are the maple and pistach a distant 4th and 5th, do they not grow as well or do they not fit the setting as well? They are great, don't grow as fast as the others and that seems to be a priority for this person....See MoreLooking for the perfect tree - Zone 10B
Comments (37)Poppy cock I say to the liquidamber haters. Different strokes and all, but to me the beautiful fall folliage is every bit as breathtaking as any flowering tree. Yes, the balls are ouchy, so not recommended where one might go barefoot. Yes, the roots can show above ground, but not very noticeable except in the most pristine lawn. Our forty year old neighborhood also has many near the sidewalks and none are damaged at all by the roots. Not sure, but believe the rotundaioba are quite slim and look best planted in duplicates. You can keep your fabulla-tabula. :). I'll always love my LAmbdrs best! Below are my two and neighbors behind. They " bloom" from late Oct. Thru late December....See Morevonyon
