Great way to keep soil moist for much longer periods!
Comments (3)Yeah, I think setting them in a kiddie pool filled with water would probably kill them, unless you're talking about swamp cypress! Too much water might be worse than not enough for most plants. DickieFickle(?) Sorry about the long story, hope it didnt bother you too much!...See MoreKeeping Soil Moist (50/50 Verm/Peat Moss)
Comments (4)Any potting mix will dry out quickly when under warm lamps and in a constant breeze. Never let it dry out completely. A home made mix doesn't have a wetting agent in it so it will be more difficult to get it wet again once it dries out completely. Bottom water and give it time to absorb. Adding a water retention product would help....See MoreHow to prepare keep moist before planting a tree?
Comments (7)they ALL told you the same thing.. please dont ask again .. as they are not going to change their mind ... [well.. actually you can ask as often as you wish.. but we arent going ot change the answer] .... and this is why ... the KEY to growing a tree.. is water management.. which means drainage ... when you create a hole.. filled with a soil/media that is completely different than the surrounding soil ... you create a watering nightmare ... as the interface between the two makes managing such impossible ... e.g. ... if i plant a pot of high peat media.. in my sand ... the sand.. will eventually start wicking the water out of the peat .... and once bone dry.. the peat is near impossible to rewet.. in the ground ... and the plants roots will end up dry rotting .... instead.. if you plant in the sand.. and mulch and water properly.. most things grow like the weeds they are.. especially trees ... plant in native soil.. mulch properly .... and learn how to water properly.. for two years.. and then most things can go free range ... there is no panacea for NOT watering properly .... ken...See MoreSetup to keep some vandas moist
Comments (7)Great Ideal !!! This set up is very sim to another one that I tryed and it worked quite well . Here is how I did it . How to Keep Your Vandaceous Happy As you know, humidity is one of the most important factors in growing orchids, especially for those in the Vandaceous Family (Vanda, AScocenda, Rhynchostylis etc.). Home-made humidity tray is a simple functional way to keep your plant happy. Materials Required: 1. Any tray (plastic or metal), at least 2 inches deep. 2. Two clay pots per plant (must be clay pot, can not substitute), one large (at least 7 inches in diameter) and one small (3-4 inches in diameter). Procedure: 1. Fill tray with water, about 1 inch high. 2. Place large clay pot in the tray (see Fig.1). 3. Place small clay pot upside down inside of large clay pot (see Fig.2). 4. Put your orchid on top of small clay pot (see Fig.3) and place them in a bright window (East or South or West window), away from direct sunlight. Keep an eye on water level, add if needed. 5. Fertilize (20:20:20 weakly weekly) and water them regularly (at least every otherday for Vandaceous that grow in the pots without potting media or with few pieces of large fir bark or charcoal). 6. Adjust the light or fertilizer as needed, some Vandaceous need longer hours of light (more than 12 hrs/day) so artificial lights (grow light) may be needed to supplement day light for an additional 4-5 hours in the evening, especially in Winter. Bloom booster fertilizer (10:50:10) may also be required. Happy growing Darwin...See More- 13 years ago
