Cherokee Purple Shape

I grew three CPs this year (first year). These seem to be having issues in shape and texture. Some are growing almost like saddles and have weird "sink holes" on the blossom end. My wife calls them tomato butts. Others grow in a saddle shape. They don't necessarily fit the description of cat-facing that I've seen, just weirdly shaped. My cherry tomatoes and my red slicers and paste tomatoes all have the normal shape designated for them.

Another issue is that some of the CPs are VERY soft on the bottom half of the tomato. Kind of reminds me of a guy I knew that got 2nd degree burn blisters. Tight skin, but you could tell it was full of liquid. The ones that do this have a very soft flesh. I have been slicing off that end and just kind of squeezing the flesh into my mouth; they taste amazing despite the texture. It does, however, render the thing useless for slicing.

On others the top half is a very pale yellowish color. The flesh underneath mimics the skin and has a lot of green veins.

I do get fruits that are the nice deep color with an attractive green shoulder. So I know at least SOME of them like what I'm giving them!

Is this variety finicky? I absolutely love the flavor, but am considering replacing it next year with Black Krims or something more slice-worthy. I like tomato on my sandwiches and other food staples, and these aren't cutting the proverbial mustard in that regard.

From your description it sounds like it might be BER (blossom end rot) but with out seeing them no way to know for sure.

Catfacing comes in many different forms and creative styles.

About your "saddle-shaped" CPs: Many beefsteak-types, looked at from above, are elongated: kind of stretched ("oblong") rather than circular. Frequently these end up what some call "V-shaped": looked at from the side, the longer ends are higher than where the stem is.

Are the pale yellow tops from all three plants, or only one (which might be crossed)?

Thanks for that timeline. Isn't it interesting how a variety can remain true for so long while in its native environs and then within ten years of introduction to the rest of the world, evolve so suddenly into other expressions? ***** Yes, I do think it's interesting and I'm trying to think of other comparable examples, but this is not the time of day that I do my best thinking. LOL I know Keith has said somewhere that that the CP and I think it was CG that Craig sent him have not been stable for him. But other than some wrong CP being sold all three have been genetically stable for me and quite a few other folks. And Craig also sent me CP right after he got the seeds from John Green and I've grown it many times since 1991 or so and it's still fine. However, I'm sure that Craig is more likley to see any changes b'c of the large number of plants that he grows to sell at the Farmer's Market and possibly feedback from those. But the CP to CC change occurred in his own toamto patch. Randomness at work? Why not. And the CC to CG change occurred in Darrell Merrell's patch and until recently Darrell was growing huge numbers of plants for retail sale. Aha, I did think of one other more recent example and that's all the variations of some of Brand Gates varieties. I keep telling him he's growing on top of a nuclear pile, LOL, but seldom have I see so many different varieties arise in such a short time. And since those are recent ones, I don't know how they'll stand up to time as well. All the color change ones I've known and experienced that were probably epidermis mutations have remained stable for me. I think I still have a pink Cuostralee and a pink Great Divide, and both should be red as in the original. But I don't send out seed that's not what the original should be. And flipping thru the Yearbook pages I see other color change ones, such as Amana Orange to I can't remember what. The question that usually comes to mind for me when instability is discussed is whether a variety was never stable in the first place and it's just continueing to segregate or whether a change was due to DNA mutation and that mutation was permanesntly expressed afterwards. So why create and market a whole "new" variety just because the skin is a different color but all else is the same? ****** Cherokee Chocolate wasn't created, it was the result of a spontaneous mutation. And the choice as to whether to market a variety is the choice of those places selling seeds. If you want to talk about creating new varieties I think we should look at all the so called black tomatoes to start with. When I joined SSE in the late 80's there were about 5 of them, that's all. Then the fad started for the blacks and now there are over maybe 150 of them listed in the Yearbook. Are they all different? Nope. There are those who have done large growouts of some of them at the same time in the same season and they aren't all unique. The names may be different but the varieties aren't all different. We could say the same about the current fad for green when ripes. Where there is demand the varieties will follow. Names have been changed at some places and by some folks to try to indicate something unique, something different. I could send you to a website where Green Grape was called Eenie Weenie Greenie and Cherokee Purple was called Native American. But I won't send you there. LOL And look at all the wonderful varieties that arose by accidental cross pollination and then dehybridization from that initial hybrid to an OP state. And the same for those that were deliberately bred. I could make long lists of both kinds. Many commercial seed sites, especially those that most folks who grow heirloom kinds go to, get their initial starts from the SSE YEarbook as well as varieties sent to them by others. And several of those sites put a spin on varieties for sales purposes. What does one call a variety such as a well known pink that has had an epidermis mutation from clear to yellow so that it's now red? Is it still the same as the original pink? Nope, it's not b'c there has been a mutation. the DNA has changed. Green Doctors is a nice green when ripe cherry and last summer two different folks got a mutation with it such that the epidermis went from yellow to clear so now those fruits look like frosted grapes. it was decided to call it Green Doctors Frosted, and I offered it in a seed offer elsewhere and seeds are now available commercially as well as in the SSE YEarbook. What do we do about a variety that has become PL where the original was RL? Many would say they are the same except for leaf form, but I've written here many times that I don't think that's a reasonable conclusion b'c there's more than one way to go from RL to PL and more than one gene can be involved. Is KBX, the PL form of KB ( Kellogg's Breakfast) the same as KB? Are Spudakee and Cherokee Purple Potato Leaf the same? So there's a difference in creating a variety either by deliberate breeding as many are doing now, or by dehybridizing and making selections of naturally crossed hybrids to the OP sate, or as a result of a mutation, either seed DNA one or a cell one called a somatic mutation, and those activities have to be separated from what you call marketing, which is not in the hands of those OP varieties that are a result of those activities. Every year I send the best of my new ones I've grown that year for trial to a few commercial places where I know the owners and trust them and how they run their businesses. it's their decisions to offer them if they want to, not mine. Do large corporations also create and market at the same time? Absolutely and the variety Kumato is an excellent example of that as well as Campari and Santa Sweets and many many more. Sey, I am not inconvienced at all,no no worries there ,BUT,I have participated at many message sites such as this one , as it used to be as GW,over the years,and more recently the format has changed with respect to who posts what and for what reasons. I encourage anyone and everyone to know how to search for information for varieties, whether that be at the site in question, as here,and do that first,then maybe fetchTania's superb database,if no info there,then maybe Google a bit,and if still not enough,then try Ventmarin in France. Some of the above disagree with me on pulling up old threads and my rationale on that. I also have no problem at all with folks sharing experiences with varieties and all else having to do with growing tomatoes in a certain thread,none at all,but as to other places a thread just stops when there are no other inputs and that's that,and seldom does someone revive it. So be it. I only came here today since I got the notice sent home,and no,I'm not going to stop that from happening,and yes,I was the one who first introduced Indian Stripe and perhaps the second person ever to grow Cherokee Purple,there are many threads here already about that if one wants to do a search. I spent many happy years here but when it got nasty and someone else who was also here started a new website there was a mass exodus from here to there and now there are just a few from here who have moved there and also post. There are many new folks here that I don't know,and they don't know me either,nor what my own background is re tomatoes,which goes back to when I was 5 yo on our farm.And I'll be 77 yo this June,so many years experience and have grown 4,000 tomato varieties in the meantime and also a book I was asked to write about heirloom tomatoes,which several here already know. Now homebound and having to use a walker of course I can no longer grow the several hundreds of plants and varieties that I used to grow,but I have a local person who grows my seedlings for me,and someone else who cares for them here in the backyard, and each year I grow many new ones,since I vowed when I fell in Dec of 2004 that in my seed offer elsehwere I would try to find varieties that were new to all or most,and have been very successful at that and in the process have made many new friends in manycountries. It sounds like catfacing to me, too. There is no limit to the weird shapes you can get with that. Sometimes it is caused by cool temperatures and they will grow out of it when the weather gets warmer.

I'm having issues with catfacing on one of my plants, but not the Cherokee Purple, those tomatoes are really nicely shaped. It's actually producing the most tomatoes of all five of my plants so far this year.

I have tried to grow Cherokees before but this year I think I just might have some success. I started the seed myself (it was a purchased plant before) so that might be the ticket. Looking forward to this tomato that everyone raves about.

I grew mine from seed as well, and all my plants grew very well at first, but the cherries grew big and bushy and shadowed the CPs. Not to mention the cages are too small and the tops got heavy and droopy. And the suckers have grown into the growing space of other tomato plants! The CPs seem to have stopped growing. I cut some of the growing tips off the cherries and once I get all the tomatoes off them will trim them down a bit.

Unfortunately recent flooding rains here in Pensacola have caused excessive splitting of my toms.

Next year I realize I need to space my plants out a bit more and give them larger cages to grow in. Also prep the soil a bit better and will try pruning a bit more, as I pretty much let all the suckers grow. Maybe I'll get better looking yields next year.

I got some pics of some of the problems, and will try to post them tomorrow. Thanks for the responses guys!

I went out and measured today and they were 16-18" apart with the two rows spaced 22 inches apart.

Here are some pics of at least one problem I was describing. I will attribute the other to catfacing. I did plant them out at the end of February, so if cold affects that it must be it. I planted the seeds too early and they were outgrowing their seedling containers. I had some backup seeds started just in case a frost killed those early ones, but nothing happened, so I just let them grow.

But you can see some of the discoloration here along with the white splotches. You can also see that the blossom end looks pulled up on this side toward the stem with some of the green veins apparent. I have included a photo of it next to a healthier one for comparison.

thats way to close together / they should b 3 or 4 feet apart / thats what i do anyways /mine are loaded with maters already /got some fist size but then again they seem to b doing well here this summer

I am not an expert, but it looks like something might have pecked it and healed all funny. My chickens have given me similar looking fruits, except dimple above it..
Now is the time for someone who knows something to pop in and say exactly.
They are close together, (mine ALWAYS end up that way despite my best intentions.) Fertalize, prune if you must, mulch, and water when needed. Just my .02.

I'm not an expert either, but I agree that the "white splotches" look like some sort of physical damage that has scarred over -- perhaps insects chewed on it. For whatever reason (presumably related to the scarring), that side of the tomato didn't fill out as much as the side away from the camera.

From what I've read, the stripes are seen on some CPs and not on others.

I haven't ever heard of a CP with the coloration of the lighter one. Are all the tomatoes with that coloration from a particular plant? If so I would suspect that plant is not a CP but either a cross or something else: probably a CP cross because of the striping.

Tomatoes ripen first on the blossom end. That may explain the bottom area being more liquid. Perhaps you should try eating them a few days earlier.
