Hi and welcome to GardenWeb! Well, I don't grow vegetables myself, just flowers. However in regard to growing vegetables in your unheated garage, I'm sure it would depend a great deal on which vegetables you grew. I know that lettuce, for example, will grow in temperatures in the forties. On the other hand, warm season vegetables, such as tomatoes, would probably require temperature at least in the sixties, probably even the seventies? The heat mats are generally used only for germination. So once the seeds sprout, off goes the heat mats and plastic domes. Continuing to use a heat mat after germination would probably just tend to dry the growing medium out too fast. In any case, you'll need a thermostat to properly control the heat put out by the mat. So, after germination, you're basically depending on the air temperature of the garage. And, usually the moist growing medium will be cooler than the surrounding air temperature. Your success would also depend on how many vegetables you intend to grow. For one thing, your fluorescent lights need to be kept very close to the plants, usually no more than a couple of inches. You won't be able to get a lot of seedlings under two 48" lights. Of course, you may be planning on adding more lights (you didn't mention). If you do decide to try using the garage, maybe you could surround the growing area with those silver mylar emergency blankets, they're very inexpensive and should help a lot. cdfortin, the temp went down the lower the probe went? the humidity went up the lower the probe went, the numbers are as stated above: Temp at top 79.3F, Temp in the middle 78.1F, Temp at the bottom 77.0F, hottielover 14, I havnt checked the night time Temp and Humidity yet, I was going to do it last night but was distracted, but to answer your question I only use the heat that comes off the canopy to heat the tank during the day, at night its just the temp that the tank is normally at room Temp, but the humidity does go up at night, I will check them both tonight, although all Im a bit worried about is the humidity, but not that worried as I have a solution for that if it turns out to be a problem

there are many (many, many) people who have no problem with getting down and back into that area. yrs ago I wouldn't have and wouldn't have thought about the future and it being a problem. putting things back there that might be used once or twice a yr would be no problem - especially if someone else in the household who could pull it out easier (than I could). then there are those 'grabber' things (I have one) for picking things up or reaching things up too high. a lot of people don't like the LS shelves. I don't. I think the side /moveable shelves would work nicely for what i'd use (place for oil, PNB etc). and the open area to the left would probably fit my dog food container. if those things fit I'd be happy - if I go that way. otherwise I think the best use in that type cab would be a 2 layer pull out shelf set up that angles in from front corner to back corner. mostly I've been thinking that 2 drawer banks would suit me better than the corner cabinet use. I do think it'd work for the upper corner cab also. another one I'm thinking of NOT putting in my kitchen.
