Eating bee hive???

Alright I had a little bee hive - I had the bee man coming to move them to a safe place out of my yard where my son sould think they where cool to play with... today I am out there getting ready for him and poof the bees, hive, honey, comb and all are gone. They where there this morning now they are gone. I am guessing that something came to eat the honey - but what eats the honey and comb and would take on the bees like that? I just want to know what I have living here near me! I knew bears might what else takes on the bees?

Are you looking to get bees to move into the box or just attract them to watch them feed. If you just want them to come and eat, you might try granulated table sugar mixed with water. We generally feed ratio of 1:1 sugar/water in spring for building up an existing hive, but if you just want to attract bees try 2:1 ratio of sugar to water. It may attract more than just honey bees. If you're looking to get a swarm to move in you should bait the box with a swarm attractant which contains a pheremone to attract swarms looking for a potential home. A strip of beeswax foundation inside would also be helpful. The thing is, if you do get lucky and catch a swarm, they will have to be hived shortly afterward. You should do some research, reading, and be prepared with at least a 5 frame nuc box to put a swarm in and eventually a 10 frame hive body. You might also want to check out top bar style hives which you can build yourself, and are much less expensive to get started with. Look for a local supply house and a local beekeeping club for help. A word of caution. If you live in an area that has africanized bees (check with locals) you won't want to risk catching a swarm and it might not even be allowed.

Are you in the area with Africanized bees? Outside hives are a hallmark of the African variety. The European honeybee almost never makes a hive anywhere but in a cavity. If you have small fuzzy bees living in the ground, they are usually an annual phenomenon but will re-use the hole next year. These are not really aggressive, but will sting if you get too close or if they get tangled in your hair. So far a trimming the hedge, if you are not standing in front of the opening and don't rattle the olive trunk, you will rarely get stung.

Hive survival depends more on the health and number of the bees rather than where it is. If the bees are healthy, and there are a sufficient number of them, they will keep themselves warm by huddling together. If bees are coming and going, carrying pollen in their little leg sacs, it is highly likely that there is a viable queen in the hive. Hives without queens are fairly quickly abandoned. Don't move the hive--both for your sake and the bees'! Trying to move a hive upsets the bees immensely (imagine someone jacking up your house and taking it off to parts unknown!) and upset bees sting. If it must be moved get an experienced beekeeper to do it. Very good of you to be concerned about the bees. Wish more people were!

Hey Randy! Congrats on the bees! I hope they are good and docile for you. Two years ago I purchased a hive from a fellow in Tulsa. I went, thinking that I was just purchasing the hive and frames, etc. But discovered that he was selling me the bees too, which was great. Anyway, they fit all the description of Russian Blacks. But were they ever testy! I ended up requeening. Anyway, that's not to say that all Russian Blacks are hot. I've heard that there is a lot of variability with them, and someone may be making good strides in selection. I currently have a hive of Italians and a hive of Buckfasts. Both seem reasonably calm. When we lived in Mexico we had bees and ended up with Africanized bees much of the time. I would have to requeen almost every year in order to keep them managable. Would bring in two queens a year, from Texas and raise more from them. Half Africans were okay. Three quarter Africans were HOT! When I got that hive in 2006, and discovered their temperament, I initially wondered if they were mixed with Africans. But they were not as vehement when they attacked. So, I did research on strains of bees being used in the USA currently. Appearance wise, they matched the Russian Black. George Tahlequah, OK

Not a human... in my garden very near my home...

Raccoons - do they eat beehives honey and all? Or maybe take the hive somewhere to feast on it?

Daylily, I sorry, but it's not clear to me and I am curious. When you say you had a 'bee hive' do you mean you had one of those white box type of hives that people keep for their bees, or that a bee swarm started a hive of their own making on a tree or in a wall or something, with folds of honey comb, etc.

Of course if it was a box type bee hive it would take humans who knew what they were doing to take it. The entrance to the box would have to be blocked to keep the bees inside. This is usually done at night by bee keepers wanting to move the hive with as many bees inside as possible. Or if moved in the day time the bees would have to be smoked or they would sting anyone attempting to move the box.

If it was a 'wild' bee hive made by a swarm you would think if an animal ate it you would find some residue like honey, larva and pieces of comb.

A large wild bee hive - there was nothing more then a little bit of honeycomb left on the branch.

Might have been a human.. they would of had to really want it they would have had to seeing they would of crossed the cactus garden to get it . . that is why I think that it had to be a furry friend.

Well, that certainly is a mystery alright! Did perhaps part of the comb fall down among the cactus unnoticed? Let us know if you figure out what happened.

No it was befor I called him to set up a time... I might call again over there and see just to be sure. It is the most logical move at least.

Are you by chance referring to a large swarm that settled on the limb and built a bit of comb? If so, they moved on by themselves. A swarm will cluster on a convenient limb while the scouts locate a suitable cavity for a hive. Then they may fly another mile or just a few feet to that new hive location. A swarm will usually alight for a few hours to a few days, but then they find a hive and move in.

This was there for two seasons... might they have moved on their own? My son was getting older and playing in the area now... I sure miss them I have to tell you they where the best things in the world for my garden. Everybloom set and seeds galore..
