worm factory: worms crawl down and die, then smell bad
Comments (11)Thank you for the ideas! I didn't have the spigot open but went ahead and opened it. Will be more mindful of air flow. Like I said, they seem to be doing their job and there is no bad smell otherwise. when i checked just now when i went to open the spigot there were no worms down below. You are right, a little more info would have been helpful :) I opted for the $79 version of the worm factory rather than the "new and improved" worm factory 360 that costs around 120 - seems like the biggest difference is the "worm ladder" on the WF360 which supposedly is to help the worms who get stuck down below (selling point?), as well as a different lid that allows you to stack trays on, and a tool kit. well i had the tools laying around, and a shallow plastic tub from the dollar store works just fine to set the trays on :) so far i am really enjoying my worm bin... it really is very cool... has anyone else had this problem?...See MoreNoob's new worms dying
Comments (4)Thanks for the tip. Will the white portion of watermelon (less sweet) work? Our dog used to love them. Indeed, this morning I found two dried worm bodies on the garage floor. One made 3 feet away from the bucket. Poor little worms' adventures. There was also one worm lying on the surface, not moving for a good minute. However, once I gave it a little more sun light, it started wiggling down. Maybe some worms take night naps on the surface?...See MoreHelp! there are bugs in the worm factory!
Comments (4)You do not want them out. That is where you are. You want them in and to stay in. That is where they work. They are working to break down material for or along with the worms. When their job is done they will magically disappear. Without bugs and worms doing their jobs our world would be a very unpleasant place to be. What did the worm bin parent leave to use as bedding? Usually more bedding solves all problems in a worm bin world. Strangely people can become very attached to their worm bin the little world which makes good use of kitchen scraps that otherwise fill our world with garbage. No doubt they trust you very much or they would not have chosen you to care for their vermicompost system. Feel free to request some black gold or vermicastings for your gardening as payment for taking care of them. Possibly they might even share a cup o worms so you can start your own vermicomposting system to make good use of your own kitchen scraps. Tell me you did not use Raid?!?...See MoreWorm Factory vs. Worm Factory 360
Comments (10)Lets face it if you have a plastic bin like I have [besides my fact. 360] it will sweat. I did a lot of adapting such as cut out the bottoms leaving a 2" lip. I replaced with 1/4" hardware cloth in that way it resembles the worm factory models. I also have wedges under neath so the bottom tray is not sitting flat on a base , it allows more air flow. After some trial and error I now leave the lid on , it has holes in it . But I do keep plenty of shedded paper inside more to deter fruit flies than anything else but I suppose it does serve a multipurpose. This works and worms stay inside as long as I keep a supple of food inside besides the paper/cardboard. The method of feeding that works best for me. Let me back up a step first. [ I save my food scraps in container until I have enough to run thru my hamilton beach big mouth juicer [800 watts] anything less than this is not powerfull enough to do the job when you have scraps like potato peels and cutup banana peels along with fruit peelings. Its usually enough to fill 1.5 gal container saving the pulp and recently started adding some of the juice back in to moisten the mix. ] Now, when I add the food it takes a couple of days for decomposition [teeming with microbes- bacteria] to take place . Worms feed from underneath first but once a mass of worms have moved on top of the fresh food I then start a new stash of food in another portion of the bin , usually opposite corner or side. In this way you can tell when the worms have moved to the new food usually 2 days before the new stash is ready. Sometimes the bacteria is working so well that you can see it before the worms get to it. This has happened before for me but now with so many worms I might not be able to....See Moregardenfanatic2003
