big white maggots i think

I have in my top bin of two, large white maggots I think...I moved the plastic back today to water the bin, and they are straight down the middle of the to bin...beside the gross factor, is this normal? I am having issues with gnats too, and still seeing earwiggs around too...r there ways to get rid of these guys, or do they just stay around and help out the worms? I have no problem leaving the bin as is, just want to be sure since I'm still feeling my bins out :o)

I have had my bin now for a year, come next month.

BTW, does anyone sell their worms yet? I was hoping to find someone in the group that might offer me a better price on 3#s then 60$ with S&H included...so let me know.

Jennifer...Check out this link: HappyDRanch.com Click on their "invertebrate" page, and Black Soldier Fly larvae. I am guessing this is what you are seeing. What kind of bin do you have? How big? How many worms, (approx)? If it is plastic, you might need to monitor your moisture. Are you putting in a lot more food? When a lot of different creatures show up suddenly, it is usually telling of what is going on in your bin. I think that the price you are paying for your worms, (including shipping), sounds reasonable. You might do a search to see if there are more local growers, when looking for a better price and no shipping.

Why are you getting more worms? you can separate some out to start a new bin. You dont have to restart just because you have other insects... or maybe im not understanding you.

Im from Cincinnati, I cant think of anyone there who sells.

water the bin? I used to pour a bit of water or leachate in when it seemed too dry, but then the moisture acumulated in the bottom and it got really foul and anaerobic. If my pile needs moisture, I usually put in a wet handful of bedding. ive had less stinky bin that way.

Hi Logician. I was just suggesting to OP - to maybe try washing the blackberries in diluted PP water to disinfect the berries before consuming. I haven't got a clue on what PP will do to those fly-larvae by spraying them but It wouldn't hurt to try it out. Maybe it'll get kill them or maybe it won't. Speaking from personal experience, spraying my plants with a weak solution of PP for a few consecutive days did get rid off powder mildew on my blueberry canes. It also got rid off earth worms and beetle grubs in my potted blueberries. I learnt of using PP from other gardeners on online forums - with no scientific studies or backups, just a bunch of home remedies suggested by online strangers. I was afraid to spray and water my plants with PP at first - thinking it might kill my blueberries. Thankfully, it didn't, PP is now my go to remedy for all ailments and treatments. I know that I shouldn't be suggesting anything without enough solid evidence and scientific backups, as it potentially could be dangerous and risky for others thinking of trying it out. PP is relatively safe as it's being used for soaking in bath. Also, it didn't harm my plants.

I would not worry about anything that's going on in my compost pile, as long as it doesn't smell. Some natural processes are just not pretty! Keep turning it, all will be well. That's my 2 cents, and I freely admit that I'm one of those people who just thinks they're knowledgeable. I've been composting for a very long time and have never seen anything go seriously wrong (unless you want to count the time my neighbor complained about the smell of a bin that was full of grass clippings).

No, I would not switch out the flooring. The AO tile is not cream, it's a warm white. The difference may be subtle but an offwhite/white color scheme is beautiful if planned from the beginning and is rather difficult to do well and not look like you got a bargain on mix and match fixtures and tile. Go the distance with your original plans and it will all be fine. If anything I might consider going with a different color than ultra-white on the walls. Maybe a soft grey or sage green or aqua or something.

Vladimir, not as significant in your situation as a potted tree. In ground trees are a different story, Carrizo is more susceptible to root rot and phytophthora. On one hand I have a gold nugget mandarin on Carrizo that has doubled in size in 2 years, yet across the yard my seedless Kishu on Carrizo just had the top half of the tree fade away and die over the last couple weeks, I'm not sure why, but sometimes it just happens. Carrizo is a good rootstock and is listed as a rootstock of accession compatible with the murcott scion. For some further info I really like C35 as I've stated in my other posts, it produces a compact, stout, bushy tree with very juicy fruit in the desert. Carrizo is a more open, upright, leggy type of tree that can be encouraged to Fill out by trimming and encouraging side growth, also listed as a standard size tree, C35 is semi dwarf. Just don't over water and your tree should do just fine. If you can get trees on C35, I would, that is my rootstock of choice, just my opinion. Evan

I did understand that I had soilder fly larve earlier in the summer, cuz they were SMALL and grey; now they are HUGE, but as long as they are helping out, I will try to ignore the yuck factor of them...I mean it can't be any worse then the goopy food I reach into from my feed buckets, right?
And I have actually started another bin with some hatchlings, so I'm hoping I can breed my own worms. The reason I was going to buy more was really bc I don't think the amt of worms I have is enough to consume the food my husband and I scrap each day...I love my worms and I'm excited to learn new things everyday.
On a buying note, there are wholesale bait sellers here in Cincy where I can get a pound of worms for $53, which is sad really!
