I decided to start a second thread as 54 posts is a little long.

I sent cocoons to 2 more newbies this morning. I used the technique that worked well when I sent some to Seattlegirl. That was 2 pieces of thin cardboard (beer container) with a donut of corrugated cardboard taped in the center.

Both promise to start posting here to tell of their trials and tribulations.

Hi Everyone, I was at Home Depot in Orillia and they have clematis' on for $5.00! Some where combinations of 2-3 small clemtatis' plants together so you have blooms at different times in the summer. Some were not combinations and marked with their names. Regardless, I picked up 4! Where else can you get 4 clematis plants for $20 bucks! Canadian Tire in Lindsay had them on sale for $6.99 last week, but they go back up to their regular price of $9.99. Trancegemini & Squeeze- Thanks for your opinions. The reason I haven't responded earlier is that I've been doing a LOT of thinking & research into some of your ideas. 1. For one, I'm really considering getting the vermiculite out of the equation primarily because I see it breaking down in my existing raised beds. Cost is also another consideration, thus sand as a possible substitute albeit very little water holding capacity. 2. Weeds. Still concerned about weed seed... in a big way. I hear your recommendations on mulching etc and certainly intend to incorporate it in some manner (maybe plastic sheet or maybe just straw/hay/leaves etc... remember this is a commercial application that needs to be able to be repeated). That being said, if I could "eliminate" or at a minimum reduce mulching & weeding requirements it will save labor in the end, ultimately I believe reducing cost. This is an intensive farming operation with most crops grown on 6, 9, or 12" centers, so I'm thinking that once all the annuals get up and running the shade itself will reduce my weed potential problems. The sand I have access to (my sand) is going to have all kinds of grass seed (bermuda +) and roots in it that will be a major problem. I've already experienced that in my 1st beds done with sand. That being said, part of that problem could have been not using the landscape fabric under the beds. This stuff will actually shoot up through 16" plus. So, bottom line is I don't have what I consider to be a very good option that I can get for free. 3. Topsoil. I looked hot and heavy for topsoil sources. Bagged stuff listed as topsoil probably isn't top soil anyway and the bags I broke open (various types)don't seem like they could be any better than anything I could mix myself. The one benefit to them is that they PROBABLY don't have any viable weed seed in them. Another downside is that there is no telling what kind of pesticides may be incorporated into it. 4. Bulk topsoil. So, I started looking into bulk topsoil. There's actually a sand mine about 30 minutes away and I called them to inquire about topsoil and they do sell it. It's reasonable to assume that it is "true" top soil and I got excited when they gave me pricing. After I slept on it I started thinking weed seed again, and there is nothing that they do to sterilize the product to eliminate the weed seed, so, I'm back to square one with the top soil. Even looked at trying to find possible sources of kilns to heat it up to kill the seed to no avail. 4. Worm Castings. Contacted a company that sells bulk worm castings, and yes, there is a HUGE ouch factor to try to replace regular compost with the worm castings. Doesn't seem feasible to me monetarily. So, in discussing with him he mentioned that he had done some work with a relatively local municipality on composting (not worm) and suggested I contact them and see if they are still selling compost. I did, and they are. He said it should be good stuff and mentioned a sovita test that they should have the numbers on for their product. He said weed seeds should NOT be a problem with their compost. He recommended possibly using ONLY compost for my base medium (forget peat and vermiculite and I suppose sand) then incorporating the vermicompost at a 20% rate on top of that. Sounds possible but still very expensive on the vermicasting side of things. But all in all possibilities. Waiting on a call from the municipality to get the sovita test score and to find out additional info regarding the ingredients of the compost etc. My biggest concern about it right now is chemicals/pesticides that could be contained in it, assuming they use things like grass clippings and leaves etc. We'll see. If that doesn't turn out to be an option, I'm at a loss on the whole compost thing until I can get something relative large scale going myself. 5. Blend. So, now I'm thinking I'll use a Peat moss, coarse sand, and compost blend with the vermicompost in lesser quantities than a full replacement for the compost. Not sure of quantites yet. Not sure of a good source for coarse sharp sand in bulk quantities that has no salt content. Bottom line is this "mix" should be much better than anything I could purchase of the shelf and I know what I'm putting in it. It gives me a starting point that I can continue to build on organically with manure/compost/greensand/dolomitic lime/blood meal (probably/maybe/still a little scarey)/rock phosphate etc. Anyway, I know this is not quite where you were trying to get me to, but your help is certainly appreciated and has been incorporated into my thought process. I thought long and hard about using my existing soil, but just can't rationalize it for what I'm attempting to accomplish. Thanks! Eddie

Let's clear the air a bit if possible. equinoxequinox, feel free to use my name. I'm not sure why you chose not to. Maybe for fear of censorship. I think you hit the nail on the head with the commercial nature of this website. For what it's worth, neither of my other forums derive financial support from advertising. And THAT is neither advertising "for" those sites, nor an attempt to get people "here" to go "there". Simply comment. Since it was one of my posts that was deleted, I suppose I could be offended, but I'm not really. This site, like many others, is a COMMERCIAL site. They do not offer this site in order to "make a better world" nor to be "friendly". They operate this site to MAKE MONEY. I understand that. ANY activity that they PERCEIVE will diminish their revenue stream will be "dealt with accordingly". As I said, I understand. One should not expect a koala to behave like a snake and vice versa. About the only things that I would like to see changed here at Garden Web is the addition of 1) A better editor that allows the use of more editing options so that the only option for emphasis is NOT capital letters, 2) "Stickies" - a means of permanently placing significant threads at a location where they can be easily found and referenced. This site - Garden Web - especially for a commercial site, is the most "primitive" site I know of on the web. It would be easy to say "It's all about the money", but it isn't. It's about having the business acumen to recognize what increases "flow" in a revenue "stream". Being "primitive" does not increase "flow", and in fact can actually impede the "flow". Garden Web is an interesting place. I've met some nice people here, as I do on every website I venture on to. There are a few sites in which the thugs that run the site have actually succeeded in driving me away permanently, but those are very few. Garden Web appears to have enough internet savvy to choose their words carefully when admonishing those that they perceive are threatening "harmony" AND thereby the revenue stream. Their actions in this particular matter seemed neither necessary nor "wise", but they weren't particularly heavy-handed other than the deletes. So here's my take on the WHOLE matter: 1) Garden Web has NOT bent MY nose out of shape by deleting my post. 2) I hold no "grudges" against ANYONE here at the vermicomposting site. Based on first-hand experience, I strongly suspect that there isn't a poster on this site with whom I wouldn't enjoy spending an evening. Let's move on to new and better WORMY stuff. Costco Virco Grill 'The Classic' Part 2

I purchased the Costco "Classic" back in the early 2000's - I think it was 2000 to be exact. I am STILL using it in June of 2019 (love to read the "I'm afraid of this new product's longevity / reliability" comments posted in 2002). Went through several grill covers - I leave it out all year long - much too heavy to move around and I am in NJ so we don't use it after November open it in late April/Early May. A good Quality Cover is important to keep water out of the side burner compartment (does not drain at all) and main burners - water is bad. But if I took some photos of this grill you would think it was only a few years old. It is by far the best grill I ever owned - replaced the heavy duty high BTU side burner once because of water damage (found an exact replacement - you need to search for the specific model to buy quality parts - not the imported junk sold on Amazon) and the main burners once in 18 years - one of them needs replacement again - I did find the CORRECT heavy gauge stainless main burners on line at a BBQ parts store. As a comparison (you get what u pay for) the thin gauge stainless burners that u get from Big box or Amazon cost around $20 or less for all 3 burners - the correct heavy gauge SS replacement burners cost over $20 each - if u but the cheap ones they will rot out in a season or maybe two - the heavy gauge replacements will last 5 to 10 years. Other than trying to find a quality cover that will last more than 2 years (I am trying a new "King Kong" brand cover - it's more $$$ than the run of the mill types but fit, feel, vinyl thickness seems to be of a much higher quality - last one was a top of the line Sears brand - got about 4 years out of it before it rotted away. The grills are indestructible as is the frame, cover and other parts that fall apart on other grills in 5 years or less, no rust or corrosion anywhere, easy to clean, BTW - I converted mine from propane to Natural gas after the first 3 or so years once NG was available in my neighborhood, I also converted a 40 year old Propane fireplace to Natural Gas.. You don't need a "special kit" from the manufacturer - all that is needed is either replacing the venturi valve orifices on each of the burner controls including the 3 main burners, the rotisserie burner and the side burner, or you can carefully drill out the old orifice to support NG (Propane is under higher pressure and uses a smaller hole than NG) - I did this on the fireplace - you need a special sized (numbered drill bit) drill bit used by machinists - they use numbered bits as opposed to what most people are familiar with like 1/8" may be a #34 in numbered bits - they can be had just google - I think Harbor Freight may carry them as well since they are used by the automotive repair industry as well. Once you look up the correct size hole for Natural gas in your area (sometimes extreme elevation may require a different size than sea level - easy enough to research) I recommend using a drill press (I have a small one that cost under $100) for a perpendicular hole - but the orifice metal is soft brass - this isn't rocket science. If you want to purchase replacement venturis - especially if your not sure if u may move and convert grill back to propane) they are very inexpensive for the kit, size / threads are pretty much standard - any good Fireplace, Professional Plumbing that deals in gas appliances, or BBQ grill stores (on line or retail stores) can provide you will the venturis u need based on the model grill - or worst case - u may have to remove an old venturi and take it to the store or measure it using a caliper or precision ruler & a photo to send to on-line store. There are only a few different sizes & most BBQ grills are one size. The post that said " I heard you need to change burners if u convert from propane to N.G. or u get a yellow flame" is total nonsense - if they were told that by a salesman - they were being ripped off. The burner doesn't care if the fuel is propane or NG - that is ridiculous when u consider how many other gas appliance can run on either fuel and imagine having to change the burners in a 600,000 BTU Pool heater because you changed from propane to NG or visa versa - that would cost about $500... I converted both my fireplace & grill to NG and did not change either devices burners - the FP I drilled out the venturi and the grill my local FP store/repair shop (been there for 40 years - an old timey type shop) had the 5 venturis needed for the grill - again not special for my grill - same size as Weber and other big USA name brands (Ducane, Viking etc...). I think they were something like $2 to 3 dollars each. Taking apart the gas control valve is easy once you get it out of the grill - a bit difficult cause you have to lay on your back to access the valves. REMEMBER you also need to remove the old Propane feed hose assembly from the main valve assembly that has the gas input male flare fitting (should be 3/8" male flare - if you measure the outside diameter of fitting it will measure 1/2" !! that is 3/8", a true 1/2" fitting would measure 3/4" outside diameter - I don't know why gas fittings are listed by INSIDE DIAMETER when all other plumbing is measured by outside diameter - anyway - if it measures 1/2" then it is 3/8" that you would need to order/buy - this can be purchased on Amazon - the hose comes in 6', 12', 25' & 36' either 3/8" or 1/2" fitting - one end - the female 3/8" flare - screws onto grill 3/8" male flare - the other end is a two piece quick connect safety push & click connector - u need to have an outside male NPT (pipe thread) connection from you on/off ball valve - I believe it is 3/8" also (not flare - NPT) - the hose comes with the quick connect adapter that screws onto the 3/8" male NPT - the other end is the "quick connect" female - the hose has the male push on quick connect. The rubber hose is actually 1/2" even though they list this as a 3/8" (I accidently ordered the 1/2" hose & Fitting - 2x as expensive - longest = 24', and huge in comparison to what I needed - as I said before the 1/2" is much less common - harder to find and measures 3/4" fittings, hose etc... - had to send it back to amazon and replace with a 36' x 3/8" worked perfectly & extra length was needed. Having an outside ball valve allows me to shut system off when not in use - in case a critter chews thru my hose - but if you disconnect the quick connect fitting it has an automatic shutoff at the fitting - good if someone pulls off hose at house but doesn't help if vinyl hose is cut or eaten. The hose I have is 15 years old - no leaks. o conversion is relatively simple 2 step process - replace the 5 venturis or remove and drill with correct numbered drill bit sized for NG & replace propane high pressure hose with low pressure 3/8" x length needed - 3/8" flare on grill end & quick connect on hose end - recommend installing outside ball valve to shut of gas when not in use.

It's a really nice thing you (and the others) are doing. Don't let one bad experience ruin it. You are acting in a very generous way towards fellow gardeners.

I received a wonderful gift of worms from antoniab, and will gladly vouch for the extremely friendly gesture that this truly is, and I will also say that as a recipient of such generosity, it was truly AWESOME! I am preparing to send some pepper seeds back to antoniab in a few days. I finally have the proper envelope to send them out.

So allow me to say thank you for all the recipients of this generous act! It is appreciated.

I love to even just see anothers garden. The weedier the better. So you all's getting to share worms is way great. No doubt pictures of the grandkids would be great.

Just a quick note to anyone thinking of sending worms instead of cocoons. African nightcrawlers need to be packed differently than red wigglers. I don't know how differently just yet...I'm working on it. The problem is their wandering tendencies don't stop just because they're wrapped up in a box.

Here's what worked for red wigglers:
Â line box with a few sheets of newspaper
Â throw in some dry coir
Â add the worms with some of their bedding
Â cover with more dry coir
Â wrap up the newspaper & seal the box

I did this once in late June and the EFs made it safely from CA to IL in 4 days. By contrast, 95% of the EEs died going from CA to FL even though it only took 2 days. Here's the method I used (including photos). Scroll about halfway down.

One last thing: If the person receiving the shipment is not sure they can be there to accept the worms, request the post office to hold the package for pickup.

I started this whole thread as a way to get people started with a minimum of cash outlay. Personally, I would have been thrilled if somebody had offered me cocoons when I got started. I'm still looking to expand my worm variety.

I could have bought a pound or so from a vendor, but I also get alot of personal satisfaction from starting with very little and building from there. I also think it somebody has to work for what they have they appreciate it more.

I intend to help others get started for a while. Don't expect an immediate start. A hundred cocoons does not take up that much space and it looks like very little when you open that little packet. But if only 1/2 hatch the person has a decent beginning.

Just a quick update on the EH cocoons pjames sent me. Several days ago I moved the cocoons into a quart-sized mason jar and added a few rabbit pellets as food stock for the babies when they hatch. I put the jar in a dark place and left them alone. I checked today and here's what I saw.

Andrew..Any idea what those flowery looking growths are? They look fungal. It doesn't look like any of the cocoons are in a hurry to hatch....

Pat, I don't know what those are. There's a mushroomy look to them. I actually thought some of the cocoons look quite a bit darker than before. I was encouraged at the change in color since that shows they're progressing towards hatching.

Hi everyone,

Update: there are quite a few worms in my bin. I'm surprised at how quickly they have hatched and begun feeding. Interestingly, they are clumped in several places throughout the bin, despite the fact I put all the cocoons in one area. Good to see that they are moving throughout the habitat.

Thanks again and I'll let you know how my bin progresses.

@JerseyJim - Not only will I post I added the video... I hope you like! BTW I was trying to sign up so that I could post on this forum before but kept getting error messages... P.S. If there's anyone else who's willing to share their cocoons/worms I would love to be the recipient of those... A quick intro. My husband, Larry, and son, Anthony, have caught 'worm fever'.I am their 'hand on the keyboard'.We have read most of this forum and lots of others. They have each set up worm bins, but have used different methods. We are thrilled with the cocoons pjames shipped. They arrived 9/11 in perfect condition, even tho it is very hot and dry here in SW MS right now. We will share pics when I get that figured out. We are very grateful for the info you have all shared. Pat, it took just over 3 weeks, but the babies are here! I can't get a good photo from the side, but there are several worms visible against the glass. Note the collapsed cocoons. Moisture content is very high in this jar, so I don't think those dried out. They're just empty. ~Andrew

I posted in the original thread but then saw that there is a second series to that thread so Im going to duplicate my message here.

I was just getting ready to start a worm bin after researching meticulously for the last four months or so. I cant believe how high priced the worms are!!

Ild be greatful to anyone willing to send a starter colony my way whether it be worms or cocoons! I have quite a few tomato strains I could share in reciprocation...

This is a great gesture and myself, as Im sure the other newbies here really appreciate! If anyone wants to be so generous, just let me know how to proceed and ill get right on it.

Sorry ozzz. I think you are in the US and I don't think I can ship worms over the border. Might need some kind of licence or something, I think they'd be considered animals or something.

Ozzzz...I never got the email you said you sent. Resend it and I'll pull some cocoons for you. That, of course, goes for anybody else who wants a small starter colony. Over the next few days I a going to try to harvest as much sifted vermicompost and castings as I can for a fall garden. We are in a drought here and the little seedlings need all the help they can get.

My kids and I would love to be the beneficiary of this movement. Nothing much to trade, save some worm karma. Is anyone still interested in sending eggs/worms?

I'm a California patio gardener, trying to teach kids about recycling and nature. Our first try with our worm farm didn't go too well, but I've done a lot of homework since then.

Campbellute, I'm a California patio gardener too. Are you in Campbell? Close enough to Mountain View, I'd be willing to show you my worm bins and send you home with a bunch of red wigglers.

My system, which I'd like to popularize, involves large unglazed flower pots (3 of them currently) with cloth stretched over the top and held on by bungee cords to keep gnats from swarming around them. Easy to remove when adding food or bedding, most days all I do is sprinkle them with water.

I find that the pots work well at insulating the worms from the hot sun. Even though they are in a narrow paved area between two townhouses, they still get direct sun part of the day.

My plan is to cycle the bins by moving the mass of worms into a new pot, then adding regular compost to what remains behind and planting something over the top. Once I reach steady state, I will have the patio filled with pots growing flowers.

I've done this once already, I grew basil and while it was growing the soil level went WAY down. The end of the cycle involves emptying out the loose soil and worms, what's left is a great deal of worm castings stuck to the sides and bottom of the pot. Really easy to harvest, no sifting involved. Distribute the castings to the growing pots and put the soil and worms back in with new bedding to start a new worm bin.

Does anyone know if transporting worms in carry-on luggage is acceptable?

Hi all -- sorry I haven't checked in. My cat got very sick not long after I got the worms from steamyb and I've spent the last few weeks trying to get her better and, ultimately, mourning her, so I haven't been online very much.

steamyb, I do appreciate the worms and, having been to my parents' and back, now have the lemon trees to send back, but I threw out the envelope and don't have your address anymore. Sending you an email separately to get that.

My worm experiment, unfortunately, failed. I suspect the temperatures on my back porch were too much for them, but when I brought them indoors some sort of flies in the compost hatched and infested my house, so I had to put the bin back outdoors. The next time I checked in, I couldn't find any worms, so I think the heat did them in. :(

Campbellute, you should be able to send email from the My Page link in this message. We are conveniently located across the street from the San Antonio Caltrain station. As far as carrying worms through airport security, you can't even bring toothpaste over a certain size. But, I'm game if you are.

First worm sighting today!!! He was a cute little guy. Not real big, very narrow in the body, but fairly active. He moved away from the side fairly quickly as the light hit him.

He's got access to part of an old squashed banana (over 4 weeks old) that was placed in the bin when the cocoons arrived. He also has access to some of the stringy part of a pumpkin from a pumpkin I cooked up for soup and roasted the seeds. The strings are still fairly in tact from the look of them (I put them on the side, so that I could see when they are eaten).

Things are going fairly well so far. Still waiting for the rest of the cocoons to hatch. Patience is a virtue...I keep telling myself. It is exciting though.

What advice can any one give to a newbie at this stage. I guess the biggest concern is me getting crazy and over feeding. The pumpkin strings were about 3 or 4 tablespoons worth, and the part of the banana from earlier wasn't much more than that. I figure I shouldn't have to worry about feeding again for a while. Maybe Christmas, but certainly not before Thanksgiving. Any help is appreciated.

I've moved my worms to a larger bin (a big RM bin, with side ventilation holes about 2 or 3 inches from the bottom. These holes are meshed over, and there are PVC tubes to allow airflow through the entire bin. There is also a vent on the lid, although, currently I am running with the lid off, and damp paper towels over the top. I'm curious how long it will take for the paper towels to dry out. Anyway, no new worm sightings when I moved them, but I did see a bunch of cocoons still unhatched. I'm guessing that first worm sighting was just an early riser. The rest should be along eventually. I'm going to try not messing with the bin now for quite some time. We'll see how long I can last.

Hi everyone, I just found your site. As soon as I learn about Vermicomposting I will be asking for donations of worm varities. But that is premature at this point, I just found out what vermicomposting is (almost said what its all about, not so). I'll keep in touch. I am a container gardener, could I raise my worms in the same containers as my plants? Sounds like everyone keeps them seperate. Maybe at some time I could send plant cuttings in exchange.

Hi. This is my first time at this forum. I have to say I was a bad worm mommy my first try. I did a lot of reading, watched video's on how to make the bin out of a rubbermaid container. But after reading here for about an hour, I now know what I did wrong. I overfed those poor things. So I promise to be a better mommy if someone would be so kind to share with me. I post all the time on the Florida forum and am on here frequently. So I'll surely post my findings, etc. I also hope to get some at an Organic Gardeners Meeting I'm going to on Wednesday. My first time there and it's their seed swap so I'm excited!

I have lots of free wigglers to share if you're in the Baltimore/Washington area.

I have three bins and they are reproducing like crazy since the weather's warmed up. I'm not even playing Barry White!

Seriously, I set up two new composters this week from our freecycle group. The more worms I give away, the more I seem to have next week. I think its better to get started with a nice assortment of granpappies, teenagers, babies and coccoons and a little extra microbe filled compost. And the price is right too!
