I went to the one at the Plains East United Church and got there late .. so things were picked over. They had alot of different perennials .. most are fairly common but not a bad selection.

Joyce...any luck with The Fairy rose? If Walmart didn't come through, maybe you could try Terra Nurseries...a little more expensive but first rate plants.

I was at the Garden Gallery on Fairview in Burlington today .. they have Mophead Hydragea for 9.99!!! I picked up one as I already have four different types .. this one is red!! Picked up wave petunias for my mom for .99.

Walmart did not have the Fairy so I bought New Dawn instead for 7.95 at Garden Gallery, last weekend. The Fairy they had was a miniature rose so I didn't buy it.

I posted this info over in the London Area Swap thread but I'll repeat myself in case anyone is interested.
There is a Silent Plant Auction in Port Franks on Tuesday, May 17th. It is put on by the Port Franks Garden Club in the Community Centre and doors open at 6 pm-auction runs from 7-8 pm. I went last year and was amazed at the amount of plant material all donated by local gardeners. Tables and tables of perennials, annuals, vegetables, natives, house plants etc.
It was a lot of fun...you walk around and write your bid for a plant on a piece of paper in front of it. During the last ten minutes there is a good natured frenzy of strategic bidding until the end when you triumphantly claim your purchase. I don't remember what all I got but they included a hellebore and a prickly pear cactus.

Joyce...That's a really great price for New Dawn. So, this is probably too late... I was at Fortino's (Loblaws) on Saturday...they had tons of The Fairy...big, healthy plants...$12.98.

I was at Sheridans looking for ferns. Prices were a bit too much - between $12 - $14. Found ostrich ferns at a local garden centre (Can't recall name but it's just below Major McKenzie & Bayview) for only $7.99 for larger plants. Problem is, after all these hunting, I can't use Ostrich Ferns as it requires a lot of shade. I'm still shocked to see prices of fountain grass not going down. Most are higher than $7.99. It's an annual, and you'd think prices could go down a bit.

What, no bargains to be had anywhere in a week? All those stores must be too busy raking in the dough to be giving bargains. LOL

Well Jroot .. Walmart had the tropicanna canna on for 9.97 .. like I needed anymore cannas .. but they seemed to be calling out to me .. plus it was a good deal .. and how could I resist a good deal :o)

I was at Walmart on the weekend and I got Heuchera Lime Rickey, the new Polemonium 'Stairway to Heaven', Verbascum 'Summer Sorbet', a varigated Echinacae 'Prairie Frost', a Cimicifuga and a pulmonaria (can't remember which one) all in huge pots for $5.97 each. I also got a fairly recent sedum (lime green in color) for 97 cents and purple fountain grass for $4.97. Not sure if all Walmarts are selling them at this price. The heuchera etc were all on a shelf with more common perrenials and the sign said $5.97 so I grabbed a bunch. Went back the next day to get my aunt some and they had 1 lime rickey left and few of the others.

Ok, I know that this is now past, but I'm just so hyped about my plant score last night, that I have to call this a major "bargain" and hope that some of you also find a local hort society plant auction - there are some going on now! Last night there was one in Southwestern Ontario, and I went with my "restrained" budget of $20 - half of which I spent bidding on a funky shaped weeping pussywillow (no idea if that was a bargain or not!), but with the remaining $10, I picked up another 34 plants, including tulips, obedient plant, white campanula, valerian, 4 different sedums, tradescantia, irises, an impatience h'himalaya, evening primrose, herbs, moms, cranesbill, periwinkle.. yadda yadda.. these aren't the most exciting in the world (just in my garden, lol) but 34 well-developed plants for $10?! That's a deal in my book... :-)

I will vouch for sure that the local horticultural society meetings are well worth the visit! At the very least, at auction time!

Is it me or have you observed very slim pickings when it comes to choices at HD, and elsewhere? I noticed the usual kinds of plants, not too many new plant introductions. Also noted, not that many small sized herbs. For instance I was looking around at corner stores for a simple french thyme. There are many other varieties but this usual staple of herbs - I couldn't find in small packs.

I would like to know too! Plus, I'm curious what brand name the plants are-here in the Sarnia area, the Walmart sells Palace Perennials. The nursery that grows and sells these plants wholesale is Sipkens Nursery in Sarnia. I wonder if they supply all the Walmarts in SW Ontario or just the ones around here.

Everyone, I bought a dandelion weeder from HD at aroun $11.+ and it's worth every cent. I think it's also available at Can. Tire. It's a funny looking device and a lever -but it works. I had an easy time removing various dandelions on a boulevard. With larger and deep rooted plants, though it would take bigger efforts to remove them completely. This device works on new to midsized growths.

I believe Ianna is talking about a Weed Hog .. I got mine at Canadian Tire last year .. it does work well BUT dont you hate buts .. you have to make sure you are center over the weed otherwise you might have to go in after the rest of the tap root. HD is Home Depot .. hope this helps
I dont think it would be any good for planting .. the Weed Hog has several spikes at the end that close in on the weed and root when you hit the trigger.

Signet and wyndyacre, it was at the Walmarts in Ottawa (well Kanata and Lincoln Fields). I went to 3 of the 5 Walmarts here. Barhaven was in the process of throwing out the plants that they had killed. The plants are actually Terranova Nursery plants which really surprised me. I usually drool over their website so to see them at Walmart and for only 5.97 shocked me. I really think someone made an error as there was only one stand of perrenials marked 5.97 and they had some common hostas on it and then the newer ones that everyone else is selling for twice the price. It gave me the impression that someone put all the same size and color pots together and marked them all one price. Who knows? It turned out to be a bonus for me and several other family members.

I'm having problems locating strawberry pots (terracotta kind) - The only I spotted was a tiny one at Canadian Tire. Has anyone seen these around? It's really odd that even Home Depot didn't carry them this year.

Ianna I went to Candian Tire and WalMart yesterday looking for strawberry pots too...no luck here either!
I do remember seeing them earlier in the season, but that was before I bought strawberry plants..of course. I gess mine are just going to have to go into a deck planter.

I forgot to post this yesterday - Vesey's is having their 50% off spring planting bulbs and perennials sale. It's not as good as the one they had last year though. Last year they has a *lot* more items available, like the tree peonies and tropical bulbs, but they're not there this year... Oh well, I got some daylilies and and an Asiatic and Oriental lily I 'needed'.

Hmmm! I've got tomorrow off work, and no bargains. I guess I have to go to the local nursery and try to barter. TRY that is!

I visited the Waterloo Farmer's Market (St. Jacob's, Ontario )for the first time and enjoyed myself immensely. I enjoyed the different mediterranean cuisine and especially the Egyptian flatbread filled with curried vegetables, plus the artisan breads in the area... But most especially the neat finds I got from visiting the various vendors selling plants. At $2 per perennial plant, I'd say it's a bargain, especially considering the size of hte plant, and the fact, they are not as common. I got several red hot pokers as a result. Hostas were sold as low as $5.00 each - large sized and healthy. There were all kinds of things around.. It's a great place to visit. By June 21, the St. Jacob's farmer's market accross the road will be open for business and I'm sure wiht more interesting things to see.

Yup, that's a neat place. I love the fresh produce, and Ianna is correct. There are some wonderful deals to be made, especially later in the afternoon, when they don't want to cart all their produce back again. Make an offer.

Ooohhhh... I was there once! About eight or nine years ago - I loved that place! It's the first place we're going to go if we ever are back in that area. I didn't notice anyone with plants though, which was probably a good thing, since we were on a vacation heading down to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Plants probably wouldn't have survived the trip that well.

You probably wouldn't recognise the Atwater market area now! That whole area along the canal has sprouted into condos. The last five years has totally changed that neck of the woods. The market itself is still as popular as ever. I don't go by there as often as I used to (I'm closer to Jean Talon market), but I have noticed that the prices are going up - probably because of all the new people moving into the area.

No bargains there :-(

For those of you in the Oakville, Burlington, Waterdown areas, Terra Greenhouses started their 40-50-60 sale yesterday - right now selected items are 40% off, next Thursday they go to 50% off, then the next Thursday 60% off! Popped by the Waterdown location Wednesday night and they had tons of stuff on the sale including most perennials, pots, accessories. I picked up geranium "Rozanne" from them last summer when it hit 50% off which was a great deal for it last summer. I'll be stopping by tonight on my way home to pick up some goodies - it's "horrible" (and expensive!) that I have to drive by there every day on my way to work!

The garden centre at Fortinos in Brampton at Bovaird/Hwy 10 have started marking stuff down. For example the Peat Exceed is now $1.99 (great stuff!), the perennials are buy one get one free and Endless Summer Hydrangea marked to $20 from $30. Didn't really have alot of time to look around, kids just don't appreciate a garden centre sale!

I see in the Canadian Tire circular that they have their 75 litre utility buckets on sale for $5.99. They're round in shape, and they have rope-like handles. These make great cheap pots for big plants (like tomatoes), just drill a few holes, and you're in business. They are also good for creating a small water garden, or for storing tender water garden plants inside over the winter.

I was at Home Depot in Orillia and they have clematis' on for $5.00! Some where combinations of 2-3 small clemtatis' plants together so you have blooms at different times in the summer. Some were not combinations and marked with their names. Regardless, I picked up 4! Where else can you get 4 clematis plants for $20 bucks! Canadian Tire in Lindsay had them on sale for $6.99 last week, but they go back up to their regular price of $9.99.

Dahlia, $5 for clematis -- wow!!! I saw (and bought) an "Endless Summer" Hydrangea for my sister at Canadian Tire for something like $16.99 -- same size as the one I bought for myself at Loblaws for $30.00! (Unfortunately, mine is not growing much at all!)

Oh... and anyone in the Etobicoke area: don't bother going to Home Depot on Queensway -- their stuff is still way overpriced and not on sale yet. The Canadian Tire in that area has a fantastic perennials sale -- most 4-inch pots are $1.29, including some gorgeous ferns.

Gallon size perennials at Fortino's (originally $12.99) are buy one get one free...Hwy 10/Bovaird.

Canadian Tire at Trinity Common had their clems on for $8.99...if you wanted to take the time to untangle them...what a mess, what a shame...some were actually in bloom!

Hortico has everything (perennials, shrubs, trees) on sale this week. All 4" perennials are 97 cents. Two gallon trees are $6.67 -- I picked up some magnolias and dogwoods. Their plants are more organized this year.

The Zeller's store in Bells Corners (Ottawa) has the Poetry Stones kits on sale for 19.99 for the big kit reg. 49.99 and I think 12.99 for the smaller marker kit reg. 29.99. I was doing the happy dance when I found them.

The "Valumart" in our town had 5 small pots (approx. 4" pots)of perennials for $9.00 at the beginning of the season, but now they are "buy one get one free" so you get 10 small pots for $9.00! Anyone else have any deals lately? Anything good at Home Depot?

I just returned from a fabulous trip in the rural Ontario. If anyone drops by the Kawarthas area, don't bypass Bobcaygeon - they have a great horticultural store selling all kinds of garden accessories and garden art. Great service! Good prices..
