nandina pruning

I transplanted two poorly placed nandinas yesterday from full shade (really under some hedges) to my backyard with some afternoon sun. One of them is fairly bushy on the bottom but has a huge shoot that probably goes up 6ft with leaves atop that...guess that poor thing was trying to get some sun!

Is it okay to cut that shoot off? It is fairly thick and I don't want to kill it. And if so, how far down can I cut it??
