I though I would see if anyone is interested in doing a fun little swap while we wait for the bigger ones to start; Back to school and PattyÂs What is one your want list. The idea is an alphabet game/swap. Using the common name, botanical name or the variety name.. how many letters in the alphabet do you have available to swap?

An example would be (A-Z)

Â Send as many of the letters as you can. Can you get all 26?

Â You can also send in up to an additional 24 for just swapping. For a grand total of 50 unique packets of seeds. Please do not send doubles.

ÂFor each letter you send in- you will receive a different seed packet for that letter.

ÂFor each of the additional seed packets sent in Â something different will be sent back to you.

Âseeds must be sent in a bubble envelope that includes your GWname, return postage and a return address label. Please include a wishlist if you do not have one already on GW.

ÂSign-ups will be until September 26th; Seeds need to be in the mail no later than October 10th

I have done a little swapping - but only when I have seen the gardens where the incoming plants come from and know the gardener is as conscious of and concerned about HVX and nemitodes as I am. With this approach I am more concerned about purchasing infected plants than swapped plants. I am amazed at how even established nurseries seem unconcerned about selling infected plants. The owner of one, last year, at least knew what HVX was, but felt he sold only "safe" plants because he didn't buy from Dutch sources-only from American sources. If I found an HVX infection in any of my hosta I would never swap until I felt it was under control. I have in the past maintained a "quarantine garden" for new intoduction I might question. I know transplanting them then can slow development of a hosta, but feel it is the lesser of two evils. I am sure the quarantine approach comes from my tropical fish experiences, where I often quarantine new fish for months before placing them in my aquarium of choice. It is much easier and less risky to treat a couple of fish in a small tank than hundreds of fish in large tanks. Same with hostas. Les

Over the past 10 years and 20 swaps I don't see any rhyme or reason to it!!! Lavonne and I had a nice mix of shade plants, full sun plants, herbs, fruit trees and tropicals. Tim anf Cindy had nothing but Musa's and they made out like bandits but we couldn't give half of our stuff away. Go figure. It changes as much as the attendance does and I think it's cyclic too. Popularity wanes then comes back around just like clothing styles. That's why I'm hanging onto all my polyester Bell-sleeve, Dashiki and Neru shirts with either no lapels or WIDE lapels; embroidered hip-huggin elephant leg bell bottoms; 3" wide belts with big holes and the Beatles buckle; PEACE sign and Flower Power leather neclaces; tube socks up above my knees; mood rings; suede vests; 6" stacked heels or Earth/Moon shoes and headbands. If the Fab Four wore it, I had to have it I do think that as we get older we look for more stuff that is NO MAINTENANCE rather than low maintenance! Other than that I can't figure out a trend. It's always hit-n-miss.

See phylis's link above for some wonderful stuff. Through houzz/gardenweb and another site, I have been SO blown out of the water by tormato's swaps! The main swap is Mostly Mystery 'Mater Mailing (MMMM), with some pepper seeds, misc. veggies, flowers, etc. In one year, I got so very many tomato seed varieties that I almost groan about participating again. But...if he's going to include "everything but the kitchen sink", there are still some pepper and various bean and pea varieties I would enjoy trying. You can send in your spare commercial seed if it's not too old, as well as seed you may have saved, with reasonable effort to avoid much crossing. Also, there are people with a super-abundance of seed who might be able to sponsor you, in one or all categories, if you are very seed-challenged. If nothing else, you can purchase a seed variety or 2 (preferably not very common, if you can find it) and send some of that in to the swap. Recently, not as many peas came in to the swap as people wanted to get back - hint, hint... One of the "mysterious" parts of Gary's swaps is the rules (or lack thereof). In the link noted above by phylis, Post #170 might get you started. However, reading through the entire roughly 300 posts might get you a few laughs...your mileage may vary. In previous years, the legume swap was separate, but I'm not sure it will be this time; part of the mystery. Gary's online access will likely be curtailed until October 3 or so; if you have a question for him, Patience is a Virtue. Since I do have a vested self-interest, I will especially invite people to participate if they have any of the following seeds to share. Pepper -Cayenne, Sweet -Corbaci aka Sari Tatli Sivri -Chimayo -Kaleidoskop -Melrose -Orosko aka Orozco -Ot Chi Thien -Santa Fee Grande aka Caribe aka Guero Bean, Common -Carr Virginia -Florence -Fowler -Lazy Wife (roundish, not oblong, seeds) -Red Eye Greasy -Robert's Royalty -Seay Cut-short -Sequoia -Tennessee Green Pod -Waterloo County Mennonite aka Mennonite Purple Stripe -Zuni Shalako/Four Corners Gold Pea -Green Beauty -Minnesota Sweet (not a "sweetpea") -Sugar Magnolia There may well be 100+ participants in this swap, and some of them are quite generous. Whether you have much to contribute or not, you might be able to jump in and participate. The deadline to have seeds arrive at his end is November 10th (or November 1st if you are a procrastinator). hello hello!! well I'm all done the sets matched up, the envies labled and stuffed. I will get these in the mail tomarrow. thanks to everyone for such a great swap, and for working so hard to fill the gapes. please have a great time working with these. Hi all! I am sending out my bubbler this morning.

I missed about 4 or 5 of the letters.

Can anyone tell me if they came up with X? and the only thing I could think of for Q is Queen of the Prairie, and my seeds aren't ready to be harvested.

Connie, this has been fun...and it really makes you think. Thanks for coming up with it.

All packages will be going back out into the mail this afternoon. A couple of notes:

anyone who sent in veggies- they will be returned to you.

some peope got very creative for some of the letters :)
for example yellow marigolds doesn't really qualify as a 'Y'. for these, I placed them in the 'extra' bin.

The letter X and Q. a majority of people sent in the same exact thing so instead of just sending you back a different package of the same thing I placed them in the extra bin substituting something from my stash.

PS In some packages I threw in some extra's. I am getting ready to do a huge remodel and needed to clean up!! :)
