Worms in the lid

I've had a Can-O-Worms for 2 months now (still on 1st tray) and recently I've found many worms moving into the lid, and bottom section (where the worm tea gathers). Is it too damp? Or am I not feeding them enough?

Relax, worms just like it wetter than we would expect. Wait and they will probably go back into the bedding. Others will make the same trip.

I would fish the ones out of the water in the bottom but that is just me.

Hi chilli; The worms will gather in thoes wet places. They love the moisture that is full of air. Remember to keep a catch pail under the spigot and leave it open. Put dry paper sherdds in the base to help the worms stay alive in it. When the number of worms in the basen gets to more than you went down there put them gently back in the working part of the bin. I clean off the top cover every time I feed. Heres a link it has pics so may take time to load if you have dial up service.

kimmsr, Actually, worms like their bedding about as moist as a wrung out sponge too! One of the main reasons worms try to escape from worm bins is that they get too wet when new worm farmers feed and water them too much. Worms don't much like the really hot part of the composting process but they can really enjoy and help out your compost pile after it has cooled down a bit. As to if you should replace the worms into the bin or let them wander the lid, it makes little difference, they will likely survive either way. About the slugs, that is up to you, they may be good for breaking down dead plant material but they are also happy to eat live plants too so I usually give them a bath in soapy water before retuning them to my compost bin.

Just for the case of low maintenance, in the bigger picture it doesn't matter to the worms if the top layer is a bit dry. As you dig down there will be more and more moisture until the worm are fine. In this case then, it's just the bedding on top won't be eaten for a while, maybe until you put food on top or mix it in giving it moisture. I seen a few vids where the top layer is quite dry. No written rule that every part of the whole bin has to be worm perfect all the time. Not saying if you want to aim for this, that it's wrong. Just want to point it out as some folk have left or maybe never started a bin due to what seems like a lots of rules, work and delicate conditions. Anyway on that note, the other suggestions work well. I've used similar before, currenlty using old VC that's not ideal, sprinkled on top to cover it a bit and give the VC a second runthough.

I believe I have had the same male for 4 years. He has blue farther down on his right side. I know there has been at least one female change. Something happened to the first one after the first nesting 2 years ago, But a new one showed up for the second nesting and has been here since. I would be careful where you put the feeder. I learned the hard way. I had suet on the deck for the Wood peckers, didnt think the Sharpie would come that close to the house.....WRONG. Luckly we have tons of wood peckers here, I woud have been devistated had it been a Blue.

Thanks everyone. It's not producing tea yet and it has reached the 'ribs' so I need to add the second layer soon. But, there's still some matter that needs to be broken down in the 1st tray. Should I go ahead and add the 2nd tray anyway?

I dont have a COW but have seen a demo. HA, Ha makes me a know-it-not
Its the castings that have to be at or above the ribs. You take all the uneaten stuff and put it in the next tray. That tray has to sit on the compost tight. So the worms can travel back and forth. If a gap develops between the trays the worms can't get back and forth. So you have to check that on it and add bedding when the compost settles.

chilli the liquid in the bottom tray is not tea but leachate. Worm tea is produced by placing castings in water and aerating it. If you can o worms has alot of liquid in the bottom tray then it may be a little too wet, so add some more bedding like cardboard to soak it up. i've had my can o worms for a year now and am only on my second tray, but i think i may have drowned a few worms for a while there.
