Hi Everyone! I am usually on the wintersowing forum and just recently realized that there was a vine forum. I grew hyacinth bean vines this year on my arbor. The leaves are healthy, soil is NOT fertile, vines are tightly woven (if that makes any sense or difference...) and still no beans or flowers. I did have two beans at the bottom (my husband ate them...) and haven't noticed anything else. Someone told me first you get the flowers and then the beans. But it's almost August and no flowers. It has grown to cover the whole arbor and looks great - but I pictured it covered in flowers and/or beans. I am wondering - are the vines too "tight"... I let them do their thing on the arbor and they climbed up and wove in and out without my help.

Last year I didn't have the arbor and I grew them in pots (just because someone gave me the seeds...) and I had tons of flowers. The vines were not as tangled in the pots because I let them trail along the sunny part of the woods.

I did notice small holes (aphids?), and I notice a few on the arbor this year, but that doesn't bother me. Anyone else with this same experience?

yes, the flowers come first then the bean which is the seeds

I should reword my question: About a month ago, I did get a couple of flowers and then two beans but since then - no flowers but a profusion of leaves - my soil is not fertile - do you think there's a chance for more flowers. I am not familiar with vines but they seem "tight" because of the twining. Thanks - Carrie

Hi Patty, I have noticed that it often is very slow to flower, often not flowering until mid-summer. In my yard it tends to start blooming around the same time as the moonflower vines. Extreme heat can shut down the blooming but when the weather cools a little, the plants will flower. Otherwise, be sure it isn't in a location where it is getting too much nitrogen, like for example if it is near a lawn that is regularly fertilized. With bean plants, nitrogen can give you all foliage and no flowers. Shade possibly could impede flowering, but it would take a lot of shade because I grow beans (including hyacinth bean) in part shade all the time with great results. One other possible issue would be that flowering can be impeded by exposure to lighting at night. Hyacinth bean vines are short day/long night plants and can refuse to flower if they get too much light at night from street lights, security lights near driveways, and other outdoor lighting. If yours has too much light from some outdoor lighting, you might try planting in a different location that stays darker at night. Dawn

Speaking of Malabar spinach, I've grown both the red and green stem and although the red stemmed seems to be more readily available, (maybe because it is more colorful) I liked the green stem variety more. In my experience the leaves were bigger, tastier and it didn't seem to reseed so freely. Has anyone else had experience with both? Some people harvest a whole stem and pull the leaves off, but I usually cut only the leaves off and the stems would sprout more leaves. The leaves are big and shiny and easy to harvest and it doesn't seem like there would be a problem mistaking Hyacinth bean leaves for Malibar spinach leaves, but you might get better production if the Hyacinth vine did not over shadow the Malabar or vice versa. FYI, I'm in Zone 5 in Michigan, and MGs reseed quite readily for me. My MIL lives less than an hour from Buffalo, and our temps are usually quite similar, so I would think MGs would reseed there as well. However, IMO MGs aren't that big a deal if they reseed and you don't want them -- just pull them out or mow them down and they won't get a chance to grow and set seed the next year.

I started mine indoors yesterday; however, I'm not sure if they like to be transplanted. I may buy another pack of seeds and start them outdoors once the weather warms up. How did you grow your vine from seeds and when did you start seeing flowers/beans? We also have tons of rabbits and some years groundhogs too that love to eat our plants. Is this the type of plant I need to protect from critters? Thanks for any advice you have!

Well, as of two weeks ago, my vines started showing a huge amount of flowers - so I guess they are late bloomers. I love the flowers so it was worth the wait - Carrie

Arum - you are a piece of work! LOL

I have to go plow through my MGs, SRBs, and some sweet peas to see if the HBs in the same trough have actually flowered yet. I see HB foliage there but the mix of vines is so thick that it's hard to see flowers. lol

Jen, yeah I used to grow vines like that, but now I keep them apart. It's eaiser to pick the seeds, and they seem to produce flowers and pods better. Right now I have a MG with varigated leaves called "Love is Blue" My oh my, what a looker! Also one of my favorites is Heartseed vine. So delicate and pretty, and the little balloons with the hearts on the seeds seem so special. :) Arum
