Can worms 'stretch' to migrate upward?

I am researching vermiposting before giving it a try, and have wondered if a discarded chest of drawers would work as their home. Would holes drilled in the bottom of each drawer (or .25 polyethylene mesh replacing the bottom) allow the worms to migrate upward to new sources of food and leave their castings behind in the lower drawer(s), which could then be removed to empty?

I ask because I know the "food" will shrink in volume as they work their way through it, so would they have to produce a drawerful of castings before they can move upward? Do they stretch to migrate, or must they be in direct proximity to the new food source? (Don't laugh. I'm just trying to picture this.) I suppose you could also effect a sideways migration by putting a barrier in the middle of the drawers and removing it when one side has been processed.

Which would work better? All input would be appreciated!
