Yipee!!, I have Heavenly Blues! :)

Finally, I have Heavenly Blues, but will the new seeds germinate next Spring? Out of 3 packs of seeds, two vines survived. I've had so much trouble with this MG. Do your seeds to this vine give your a hard time? Thanks for any feed back, Arum :)

well my experience is that once you have any kind of morning glory even if just one vine survives to go to seed you will have them forever. Its good you love them!

Thank you for your feed back. Yes, I love them so much I'm even growing the infamous "Noah" again this year. Although I ripped out the vine in full flower, a few seeds survived. Have you ever noticed the leaf to the Noah? So beautifully formed. Yes, I like all Mg's except for maybe Shiva. Do you grow MG"s? :)

No, don't use a towel..get a coffee filter, easier to handle..and put your seeds in it. Drop the whole thing into a shallow dish like a custard cup and cover with water. Let them soak there until they show some white bits. I pour off the water the next day and pour fresh water over them, but I use the same filter. I've had some in a filter for a week or more, and they are still good to go. But they are no longer in water, just the damp filter. In that case it's like a damp towel. But I'd start them COVERED in water for more than a couple of days. I'm sure you'll have great success as I did, unless the seeds are old. And you will know in a couple of days, I promise you. I just noticed looking at that pot, the new leaves make it look like dragon flies hovering..and I have it with the most beautiful little day lily tuft. Even now they are gorgeous to me! Just get a well draining good potting soil. You can set them out in the ground if you want once they have rooted well, but pots are so much easier to control, imo.

I want the very light shade of Heavenly Blue morning( the original) glory.For the last few years, and maybe you have noticed too, the Heavenly Blue is a medium blue. I would also like Wedding Bells morning glory. It is lavender.I can trade seeds of Gray Morning Mist morning glory ( True gray with picotee) and Dwarf Chocolate Japanese morning glory.I will match the number of seeds you can send me. Thanks. I grew it a few years ago, and it had a delightfully loose and open form with clouds of light blue flowers. I pulled it out when I experienced my red and orange insanity two years ago. Thanks for bringing it up- now that I have recovered my senses, I will try it again. Renee

Is Clarke's Heavenly Blue, Ipomoea tricolor Heavenly blue?

The cultivar known as "Heavenly Blue" is Ipomoea tricolor. Clarke's Heavenly Blue was selected out by Mr.Clarke because it was an early blooming strain , blooming 30 days earlier than whatever other Heavenly Blue / Ipomoea tricolor was available at that time. Clarkes Heavenly Blue in addition to being an earlier blooming cultivar , was also a lighter blue color than many Heavenly Blue available today. The Heavenly Blue commonly available today is a darker color that was being pushed by the jobbers around the early 1980's because they thought it would be more visible from a distance and marketed this darker version as the 'improved' Heavenly Blue. The fact of the confusion regarding the species is based on the fact that many merchandisers really do not know how to tell the different species apart and simply mimic whatever they find on google. The Clarkes description is often used because it is related to an old heirloom cultivar and therefore likely to sell more but most sellers don't have real Clarkes (= false advertising) or for that matter even know what Clarkes really is... Sellers , merchandisers, et al - Rule #1 in business = Know Your Product - and if you don't really know your product than refrain from false descriptions and inform your potential customers in advance that you aren't really certain about your product and that you have not VERIFIED your product. Simply accepting the description you were handed by anyone else who doesn't know how to accurately identify their product is NO EXCUSE !!! I would add that if sellers really do not KNOW WHAT they are selling , they shouldn't be selling it and the excuse 'that is the label they received it with' is NOT an excuse , because it confirms that they didn't take the time to verify their product ( by growing it out first) and therefore do not know their product. The various names attached to describe the products are false advertising whether intentional or unintentional and technically a bona fide legal crime. Would any seller think it fair if you didn't pay most of the product price (?) , or if you gave them phony money = No, they wouldn't and buyers shouldn't accept any lower standards of treatment from any sellers. So, before you believe any labeling , ask the seller (who is accepting your $$ and making $$ on whatever they are selling) , why the product is accurately described in every aspect and if their answer is less than convincing , then reserve your $$ for something you can be more sure of.... bogturtle, that's what I'm talking about. Some people say that this MG grows so easily, others not so. Next year I think I'm going to plant MY own personal seed,and then buy three more packs from the store and plant them. Last year they were so thick and healthy, but were hit with the frost before the blooms could open. I planted too late. Maybe next time I will get it right. :)

Dena - Good you have your Ipomoea tricolor blooming as others reported difficulties getting this species to grow this year...not sure exactly why...apparently not always the 'rampant' grower, depending on conditions...e.g., soil, light, rain , etc.,...

Generally :

Ipomoea tricolor , like most tropical Morning Glories very rarely have seeds that will survive repeated freezes and thaws...

The ONLY species sold commercially in stores or most catalogs that will reseed in colder zones is Ipomoea purpurea and the THOUSANDS of other species , which unfortunately are usually not available to those outside of the trading circuits , do not successfully self-sow in colder zones.

There are double forms of Ipomoea nil which produce few precious seeds.

There are many different species of Morning Glories which are NOT invasive and those people who really know the most about Morning Glories and have the most experience with the many different species will know that...

Extrapolating the behavior of a few onto the many is not accurate...

The highly bred large Japanese Asagao aren't found growing wild anywhere (!)...

Wow, thanks to all your guys, for the feed back, and the good points from our MG expert Ron! Joseph I'm looking forward to your pics. this winter where we will dream of the next batch Of vines to plant come Spring. I'm hoping my Heavenly Blues will germinate, I may plant only those, and moonvine. The yard looks like a jungle, and I do have other interest that need attention. :) Arum, (Dena)
