Pair Tree - Thank you for posting the sideview (and although generally a good idea) , it isn't necessary for my personal identification purposes as I am very (!) familiar with this particular species and can ID it with a very high degree of accuracy. I had stated in a post above "The plant you posted is Calystegia sepium which spreads by underground rhizomes in addition to the seeds...it is usually way too invasive for most gardeners." I would suggest that you remove the plant because of the very high potential for spreading by underground rhizomes. You can likely (very carefully) pull up the rhizomes taking particular care to try and get all of the roots in 1 piece...you can do this if the ground is very moist and if you use something like a short handled weed root remover to assist in loosening the dirt around the roots to help in removal...if the rhizome snaps , then you need to carefully dig around the pieces left in the ground until you have all the pieces out. Performing the root removal by hand is usually much more successful the looser the soil is and may be more successful after a heavy rain loosens up the soil. The rhizomes can all be removed by hand if you do it exactly as I stated and I know others may have different opinions...mine is based on having removed all the rhizomes from 1st year plants totally successfully...and yours are 1st year plants if (!) they came out of the packet as you stated... Now , if you truly have an extremely large number of Calystegia sepium plants growing , then removal by hand w/o using toxic herbicides may not be a realistic option for you. I never make suggestions on herbicides , especially Roundup or anything else made by Monsanto because based upon my own research there are no environmentally safe commercial herbicides despite the widespread propaganda from the manufacturers / distributors and those who are unfamiliar with the studies done by researches who are completely unaffiliated (and not funded directly or indirectly) in any way, shape , manner or form with Monsanto or it's subsidiaries.....any herbicide suggestions may issue from another gardener / contributor. You asked : "Is it a type of MG, or really a weed ? " Calystegia is a genus within the Family of Convolvulaceae which is commonly known as the Morning Glory Family , so it certainly could be referred to as a Morning Glory , but , different species have different growing habits... There are species within the Calystegia genus which DO NOT spread by underground rhizomes (believe it or not) but Calystegia sepium DOES spread by underground rhizomes and is often extremely invasive in a typical garden setting because of the soft soil , lack of competition from other plants etc., The seeds of Calystegia sepium (in 10000 seed quantity) are unlikely to have come out of a commercial pack , but stray seeds can get into any crop... I am still 'somewhat skeptical' about 1000 seeds of Calystegia sepium coming out of a packet of what was supposed to be an Ipomoea (?) species There are smaller merchants with websites and on e-bay who do not know how to accurately identify species and I have seen these type of merchants post photos of Calystegia sepium and call them something other than what they are. margo_grow - Is it possible for you to post a picture of your blooms(?)in the morning after they open...as the flowers fade later in the day,they can often turn a 'pinkish' color... The botanical name for "Heavenly Blue" is "Ipomoea tricolor" and there is another cutivar of Ipomoea tricolor known as "Wedding Bells",but "Wedding Bells" has not been comercially available for many years... I have seen a revival of an Ipomoea nil cultivar known as "Candy Pink" mistakenly marketed as Ipomoea tricolor...the seeds of both Heavenly Blue and Wedding Bells are a dark brown to black in color,but real Candy Pink seeds are a light tan color... Ipomoea tricolor is completely glabrous (i.e.,no hair) in comparison to Ipomoea nil which has hairy stems and leaves... Hope this info helps... TTY,... HMMM, Emma, that pic doesn't look anything like the sydney I've been growing for several years, including this year. that is until the skunk decided to dig out the vine looking for bugs, and I didn't get it back in the ground because of the pouring rain. So the chipmunk came along and went off with the vines before I could get either of them. Anyways, my seeds came from Ronnie a couple of years ago and look like this. and sometimes they are more pink and the flowers are about 2 inches in size. Last year Burpee was selling packets of seeds in the stores that they didn't have on line. They where calling them Blue Star and described as "large 5 inch white flower with true blue striped accents open early in the morning and stay open on cloudy days. great for groundcovers. annual". Hubby picked up the packet for me because I was looking for "the blue star" MG, the one I call "real blue star" and he saw the name was what I wanted. Friend and I decided to keep the packet and sow some to see what we got. There where about 40 seeds in the packet and they all where the light tannish color seed and all where the classic shape of the tricolor seeds of heavenly blue, flying saucer etc. Sent some of the seeds out to some friends across the country to seattle, california, austin texas, Utah, Illinois, and Florida and I sowed 10 seeds myself. 9 of 10 germinated, I kept 2, and gave the rest to friends to grow in their yards and some where 1 zone warmer than me. To keep things safe, we kept the seedlings separate from each other and all but 1 of mine grew a similar flower to Aker's, Everyone that I sent the seeds to grew similar to akers as well. I got to be the lucky one. I got one similar to Aker's MG and the other one was my "real blue star". Now you wonder was it white. No way, was it white. bluish lavendar with a darker lavender star. now ay does it look like the pick on the packet or anywhere near the color and the flower size all over the country was about 3-3 1/2 inches. The seed pods from this one all grew just like the tricolor facing towards the sky and the seeds where the same as the one in the packet that hubby got, tricolor shape seeds No white with blue strips here But the other one I had bloomed like this Alas, I got seeds from it too but none of them germinated in the soggy rain we had. Burpee doesn't have them on their website this year either.

Wedding Bell Ipomoea tricolor Seeds are Dark, almost Black. Blue Star Ipomoea tricolor Seeds are a Creamy-Tan color. Emma
