No, don't use a towel..get a coffee filter, easier to handle..and put your seeds in it. Drop the whole thing into a shallow dish like a custard cup and cover with water. Let them soak there until they show some white bits. I pour off the water the next day and pour fresh water over them, but I use the same filter. I've had some in a filter for a week or more, and they are still good to go. But they are no longer in water, just the damp filter. In that case it's like a damp towel. But I'd start them COVERED in water for more than a couple of days. I'm sure you'll have great success as I did, unless the seeds are old. And you will know in a couple of days, I promise you. I just noticed looking at that pot, the new leaves make it look like dragon flies hovering..and I have it with the most beautiful little day lily tuft. Even now they are gorgeous to me! Just get a well draining good potting soil. You can set them out in the ground if you want once they have rooted well, but pots are so much easier to control, imo.

stlgirl, those are beautiful. I've never been much into MG's, but had some smaller Heavenly Blue as volunteers from feeding the birds, let them have their way for awhile, have been yanking because they glom onto anything. Now I just have and want the Heavenly Blue this year because they're traditional and supposed to have nice large blooms. floodthelast, that is exactly what I will do then. Glad they can take a little damp, I know they will wilt if they get too thirsty, but the damp doesn't last too long, doesn't hurt the iris closeby, and bearded iris don't like too much water. Siberians do like water and tend to prefer damp places. If my expensive Siberians survive the winter, maybe I can move some behind the morning glories and watch that the MG don't try to smother them. Thankyou. And yes I started everything early. My canna's are huge and have been blooming for three weeks. I started everything in a cold frame in the middle of march.I have since added a wire fence to the back of this wood fence to hold up my cup and saucer vine, purple hyacinth vine, scarlet runner bean vine, sweet peas, and a new sweet autumn clematis. Boy that cup and saucer vine drinks more water than my canna's! filix

Thanks, ladyrose65! It has color that is very deep, more so than even Akatsuki no Umi. Here's a cute smaller flower Ipomoea nil I grew a few years ago. I admired the striping patterns it made. Each flower was the same color scheme but the patterns were a lovely variation a theme.
