Does anyone grow New Zealand Flax?

Lowes on Callahan in San Antonio has some gallon size for $4.00 on their sale rack. The tag says they are cold hardy down 10 to 0 degrees and to plant in full sun (doubtful that was written for Texas full sun) but I'm wondering how they take the heat, and if they get ratty looking in the summer. I bought one for a certain pot that gets filtered sun. Has anybody got any ideas on how it might do in that situation?

I think the cold hardiness really depends on the color. Diffeent varieties have different vulnerabilities.The dark purple is more hardy than tjhose beautiful pastel colored thing. Figures . As for the sun, I would put it in a pot and slowly move it out to your spot that has Afternoon shade...LOL...This is what I have HEARD.

I guess I'll be the one to do the experiement to see how it performs here.

I forgot to say this is the dark reddish chocolate colored one. It's very pretty and and I'm looking at the tag right now. It says it grows fast -- 12' high and 6' wide!!! LOL! I neglected to read that part before buying. That puts a whole new spin on planting it in the pot I had in mind. Anybody need a 12' grassy plant of a chocolate color? Oh well, it might work in the pot for a few months ...

I would take them if they are still available! I live in Carmel valley. So maybe I could drive up on Sat or Sun or ask a friend of mine who commutes San Jose - monterey to pick them up for me. Please let me know - and thank you so much!

Jocque, No leaf die back. These are evergreen plants through winter here. Putting them in your cellar is a good idea to over-winter in your zone 5 area, however they'll need decent light. Like most other things during this time, reduce watering. Criag W, Not all of Nanaimo is 8b. Here, terrain plays an important part as well as proximity to the ocean. Some areas such as Departure Bay, Hammond Bay, Stevenson Pt., Downtown waterfront, Protection Island etc are reliably zone 8b. Many other areas can on occasion, experience an 8a winter. These periodic 8a regions can get much more summer heat. Many times the difference is less than a half a mile! Cheers, Barrie.

WCG, only time will tell. Since I live not all that far from you, I'm going to assume your winter was similar to mine and the sharp, very cold temperatures we experienced right before Christmas combined with a very heavy snowfall, produced conditions that most phormiums would find unable to tolerate. I'd consider these at best marginally hardy plants for our area, given that every few years or so we will experience a winter cold spell that will do them in. IF the roots are still viable (and that's a big "if"), then cutting back to about 4-6" in early April will remove the dead foliage and tidy up the plant. But it will take several seasons before the plant begins to resemble its former appearance. If the root system was frozen and is dead, it is relatively easy to determine. Just tug firmly on a few of the interior fronds. If they come away easily, the plant is lost. They will also be dark and discolored at the base where they emerge from the ground. If there is still good color at the base, chances are the roots have survived, although you will still most likely have lost some of the more exterior foliage (it will pull away easily also), but that happens in even mild winters. If most the foliage is still firmly attached and with decent basal color, wait until April, then cut back.

myrah, I'm going to assume that 5 in your original post referred to Sunset zone rather than USDA zone as there is no way NZ flax would have survived for 5 years in a USDA zone 5 :-)) Yes, damaged foliage can be cut back to close to the ground - it will take a couple of seasons before they regain their appearance but they will in time. And they can be divided - commercial propagation is most often done in this manner. But they produce a big, heavy, fleshy root system and digging out a full grown flax is a serious undertaking. It took 3 of us to dig out mine (and 2 were big, beefy young guys!) FWIW, this PNW winter was not at all to phormiums' liking and a good many even mature specimens bit the dust! I will be replacing several of mine, all in place for many years.

It will grow that large in the ground in optimum condition but I bet in a pot it will be smaller and in San An, it will be smaller. This plant used to be a lot more popular in the 50's and I think people grew it in places where it was more shady and it never got that tall. Good luck. Have you asked DG plant data banks.

I think they need some cold in the winter. I`ve looked at them, would buy it for $4 but the zone is only like 8 so wouldn`t do good here. I forget what I read about them that made me decide not to try. Let us know how it goes. It will probably be 12` tall and 12` wide here.

I had mine in deep shade last summer and the color washed out and the middle thinned so they flopped over. They looked better in the winter and I'll give them more light this year.

Beachplant... Z 8 - 11... New Zealand, coastal, never freezes. Maybe heat?

might be, or the humidity. I wanted to put them in a planter and then read more on them. Seems if they were coastal it wouldn`t be the salt.... hmmm...

All three of mine bit the dust last summer. They definitely don't like lots of TEXAS sun. If I got another I'd put it in filtered sun as you described.

New Zealand coastal is very verdant. Not wind blown sand. Where I was it was red volcanic clay cliffs and rock right to the water. Palm trees ( north island) . My sister lives there. She has them in her place in several colors.. She is about 1/2 mile from the coast. Never freezes. Auckland got snow this year....freaked people out. They have TREE FERNS ! Glaciers flowing into tropical forest. Very odd place.( south island)

Mara, I don't know much about New Zealand, but from the beautiful pictures I've seen it seems like the absolute ideal place to garden. Sigh ...

All the answers to my question are much appreciated. I went ahead and planted the pot with the $4.00 plant until something better comes along. I posted a picture of it on the Texas Gallery if anybody wants to see it.

The garden are truly amazing but they get slugs BAD. and they have liver flukes in their wild watercress so salads are only good where their are no sheep around the watershed. My sister had goats and cows.
