Using Craigslist to Get Rid of Hedge

I have happy reports! When we moved into our house 2 years ago, the whole place was surrounded by old boxwoods. At last my hatred for the green mustache reached its pinnacle and I declared they had to go, each and every one.

And yet, I dreaded the labor of tearing out 15 mature bushes. So I put an ad on Craigslist.org - "Free shrubs, You Dig"! And heck if two guys didn't come out and take them all!

So a word to the lazy - if you want a big plant gone, put it on craigslist and you might get someone to do it for you!

Good for you and the folks that got em. A real win-win. I just got a used car on craiglist. It is becoming the best of the best in classified ads for the 21st century!!

pay $ for it, fertilize it, water it and just wait, it will die. At least that is what happens here. Have you tried isolating the good plants, so that you can treat the grass? it is labor intensive but may be one of your only choices.

Thank you for your reply. I don't feel insulted by my neighbor's lack of trust in my ability to do a good job. He just met me. He can't help being anal about the care of his garden and lawn. Thank goodness he is among those who keep the area beautiful. Some of our neighbors let us down badly. This neighbor has pruned this unwanted hedge for years on his side without complaint and has allowed the yardman access over his perfect lawn to cut the grass he can't see on the other side of a privacy fence. I would like to work with him amicably. I will try cutting the hedge at ground level and use the stump killer. I have room to plant crepe myrtles and ground cover between the stump line and the driveway even with the hedge roots in the ground. Thank you for your reassurance that this method can be used. Kate

One fairly easy, but not cheap, way to kill privet and other shrubs is with the trunk-spray method. You will need to get triclopyr that is a high enough percentage to dilute with diesel so that the triclopyr can be about 25% of the resulting solution. This is brushkiller, but not the same strength that is normally available in the nursery section of your big local discount store. I buy this at a feed store or such for about $89 per gallon. Used judiciously, it kills a lot of privet, though. Put the triclopyr-diesel solution in a sprayer, or in a bucket. The sprayer can be one of those 1-gallon pump things. The solution has not eaten up the plastic on mine. Don't use the sprayer for ANYTHING but weed/plant killer. If using a bucket, arm yourself with an old, wide paintbrush. Be careful not to spill the bucket, as you'll cry if $50 of triclopyr runs into the ground and kills something you don't want it to. Coat the bottom 18 inches or so of the privet trunks, on all sides, with the diesel/triclopyr mixture. Then wait. This is very satisfying. In a few days, you'll see the leaves begin to yellow and drop. The privet is dying! When it's entirely dead, if you wait long enough, it will start to rot, and you'll be able to break it off at ground level by hand and take it out to the trash or whatever you're going to do with it. If you cut it after it's dead (wait a couple weeks following leaf drop), spray the cut stump with roundup immediately, to make sure it's gone, gone, gone, especially if you see any green below the bark.

Cautionary tale here. I am a very trusting and open person and don't think twice about craigslist transactions. I once hired two men off of craigslist to haul some estate sale purchases. They were very friendly and funny and talked the entire time about what a steal my purchases were. My husband and I needed to move some things around to put the new items where we wanted them. Long story short, my iPad which was right on the sofa that they moved was gone when they left. I didn't suspect them first, and searched the entire house before calling them and very apologetically asking if they remember seeing it and if they put it somewhere when they moved the furniture around. The main guy asked the other one and said the other one DID have it and he was going to go get it from him and bring it to me. He delayed it by a day or two with some excuse or another and then his phone number was no longer active. Essentially, they just played me until they had time to scrub the iPad and sell it. Now, my husband WILL NOT entertain any craigslist transactions whatsoever. And I meet people in public spaces and only buy small things I can bring if I want it badly enough and my husband doesn't know that I still do that. It was hard, to have trusted people and to have to learn not to be so trusting. I still remain trusting, but am more cautious.

I did that last year with a huge number of euonymous bushes, which had some scale even! I had no less than 10 responses in 15 minutes.

I use FreeCycle in addition to Craigslist. Freecycle is not available everywhere, but its a great tool where you can find it. It's a Yahoo group and you have to have a Yahoo email to join.

The whole concept is there is no money involved. You are giving away an item to someone who needs it or you are asking if anyone has something you need. I've cleaned out the garage using freecycle. I even got lucky one day and was given a bunch of antique bricks that a lady wanted off her property. My only cost was the time and gas to go get them and haul them home.

I'm going to be next. Every home we've looked at is sporting a "boxwood mustache". I think boxwood smells like kitty pee pee and I like stuff that FLOWERS! PJ

I pulled mine out with the truck and then gave them away on craigslist since they didn't get damaged. The guy was going to come back and dig out the hollies but they were too much for him. He worked 3 hours and didn't make a dent in the first one, lol.

I gave away about 16 walmart bags full of mexican petunias on craigslist. Although, I have to stay away from it (a smoker, camper, window flower box, bakers rack, kirby vacuum and who knows what else has made its way to my house through that site.)

I wonder if the kitty smell I'm smelling behing my boxwood mustache is actually the bush. I thought it was a cat roaming the neighborhood. I have plans to get rid of them too. The boxwoods, not the cats.

Calling all boxood haters!!!

If you are in San Antonio and have boxwood that you want to get rid of, then please let me know.

I'm working on a new and I think inovative, design for my garden. I'm going to fill my garden with a lot of tropical elements like canna, elephant ear, ginger, banana and boxwood.

I know boxwood is not particularly tropical. But the idea is to create a garden that is not only is for both seasons, but will actually completly change it's appearence and character.

In the summer, it would be tropical and lush, but come winter when everything has died back, BOOM French formal garden to enjoy with symetrically positioned boxwood shaped in topiary cones complimented by mondo grass and other evergreens.

ANywho, just a concept I'm working on. Getting unwanted boxwood would sure be nice.

I love Craigslist! I've furnished my house over the past couple of months, bed, couch, loveseat, chair, ottoman, ferret, TV, chair, lamp... I always see people posting big trees & stuff, I figured they found out what it would cost & are trying to get someone to do it free. Some of it just would not be worth it!!! Like the hollies, too much work for too little reward. Some people have actually posted wanting you to pay them to remove their trees. Dreamers.
