my neighbor has a mountain laurel question

Maybe the folks here can give some advice. Here is what he wrote:

Umm, the heavy icing from our last big freeze split my naturally placed mountain laurel in two (60/40 split down the middle) from where the initial branches fork down to the ground (about 6-10 inches). Its still green all over and fairly hearty looking on both halves. In a vain effort to "mend" it or get it back together, I propped up the 40%

half up with a rock. The two halves still don't touch but they are closer.

Questions are:

1. will the laurel survive or is it a slow death?

2. is it possible it could patch itself together if I get the two halves together and maybe wrap them in a pseudo cast?

thanks

Teri
