Very pretty! The species name is not listed on the USDA database. Perhaps it is the same as Wisteria frutescens, a native Wisteria.

I've seen 'Amethyst Falls' which was also beautiful.

Thanks carol. Yes, I believe 'Blue Moon' is an extemely hardy variety (zone 3) of our native frutescens.

Blue Moon originated as a chance seedling here in Minnesota. It was found and named by Betty Ann Addison of Rice Creek Gardens in Minneapolis. It is probably the hardiest wisteria of all. Consensus says it is hardier than Aunt Dee (also originated here in Mpls.)

Hi katie, lisanti. I grow both of the vines mentioned. The Wisteria is by far the more aggressive vine. I don't think anything would be necessary to help the Wisteria climb to the roof because the long, long, long shoots it sends out could be left to grow long, and then thrown up to the lanai roof. A couple nails on the supporting posts would also allow it to climb. The main disadvantage to the American Wisteria is that it is very aggressive, and like lisani says, it can take a year or 2 before you see this part. The Aristolochia. What can I say? My very favorite vine. Sure, the flowers are small, and if bloom or fragrance is the prime concern, then skip planting this one. But is covering an area with lush, shingled green is where you're at, then Aristolochia is unbeatable. When other vines have shifted to flowers and making terminal buds, this one is still growing. When summer drought has turned to cool fall, this one grows, covering any bare areas that resulted from the drought, re-greening the bare spots where the Pipevine Caterpillars have eaten. At the same time, it is a gentle vine, never growing more than a foot or so down (the tips die unless they are at least a little pointing up). It doesn't make the runners typical of Wisteria, so it can go years without pruning. The one drawback to the Aristolochia is the dieback in the winter. Many of the smaller vines die, leaving a tangle of small brown vines. During the summer, this dead material is invisible from the sunny side, but behind the vine (your inside room), the brown is visible. If you are a neat freak, this is not the vine to plant. On the plus side, you can cut it all down to the railing and it will re-green. The plant is like the tortoise of the fable. It doesn't jump out and start growing with the first ray of sun in the spring. But it also doesn't stop growing after a flush of flowers like many vines, it keeps greening and greening whatever it is growing on, all summer long. And unlike the Wisteria, it doesn't run over to the neighbors and swallow their house too. I like my Wisteria macrostachya, but the Aristolochia is better behaved and less work. I am new to the forum (and gardening on my own, for that matter!) and have been doing a lot of reading here! Does anyone know where i can purchase wisteria in CNY or online? I'm not even sure which variety i should choose, but here's my situation...my grandmother has always fancied wisteria. She has one in her garden at home but it has never bloomed. Our family owns some secluded land with a cabin on it that she used to garden regularly, 15 years ago it looked like a well manicured state park. Now, i am 25 and my grandma is 75. To her great pleasure, i have always taken interest in learning from her and continuing everything she has done on our family's land now that she cannot (she has RA and is not nearly as mobile most days). Recently while the two of us were discussing my engagement and eventual wedding (which will take place on our land that we call "the hill"), she told me how beautiful it would be if we were married under the arbor up there if it were covered in wisteria. I would love to make this a reality for her, since she is not in good health these days and she is very dear to my heart. However, all these stories about wisteria never blooming has really dampened my spirits, and furthermore, i can't even find a place to buy it! Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Additional Info: -space is not an issue up there/nor will be lack of attention -i can winterize the vine if needed -looking for cutting from old, reliable flowering plant -cost not an issue -the 'arbor' in question is extremely sturdy (more like a small pergola, if you ask me) so that shouldn't be an issue, either. -we have not 'set a date' for the wedding yet, but are tentatively planning on late spring 2012, so early (**crosses fingers**) dare i ask for-prolific blooming is most important! I WILL delay my wedding for those flowers!!! Haha

Your 'Blue Moon' photos give me hope that I might have similar results here in zone 3, or at least I can hope!

Terry, this is the one to grow in zone 3! Two reasons....vine hardiness, and it blooms on new wood, so there are no flower buds to winter kill. I haven't had an inch of die back on these vines. Go for it! We haven't had -40 F. to -45 F. since I planted these (Which I've experienced a couple of times in the last several decades), but it's supposed to be good down to -40 F., so worth trying in your climate.

'Blue Moon' is an incredibly hardy seedling of Wisteria Macrostachya (Kentucky Wisteria), in case anyone is wondering what variety it is.

That is one beautiful wisteria! I heard and read it's not invasive like the Chinese or Japanese wisteria, which makes me want to try it someday. I hear the fragrance is wonderful too! Where can we find it for sale?

Yes, this wisteria is not as invasive as the oriental varieties. The fragrance is very pleasant. Not as strong nor sweet as the Chinese wisterias, but still very nice! I've been very pleased with how soon it flowers. There were actually flower buds on the one gallon plants that I purchased 3 years ago. I've got two other neighbors that bought some at the same time, and they have had the same sucess. I would highly recommend it.

Kevin, last spring I had planted an established 'Blue Moon', by autumn it had spread a good 15 ft in two directions. The new wood was still rather green late in the season and I was concerned this would freeze, though warm weather continued and these had hardened off nicely, thankfully! The winter was on the mild side with only a few bitterly cold nights and I'm hoping the vine will show little dieback.

Kevin, did you amend the soil by adding compost or manure? I've read that one must avoid giving wisteria too much nitrogen, otherwise you'll get all vine and no blooms.

Terry, I did nothing to the soil. All I did is dig two small holes under the brick pad of the trellis bench which was in place at the time, in order to plant them. I added no compost or anything. The only fertilizer I give it now and then is some high phoshorous fertilizer (Miracle Grow Bloom Buster, I think) that I have dissolved in some water. They seem to grow without too much attention or special care. Yes, it is true.... you don't want to give it much if any, nitrogen fertilizer. Good luck this year! I'm sure it will probably do well, and bloom well for you. Please post some pictures. Thanks!

Brushwood Nursery also sells it. Unfortunately, they're out of stock at the moment. I check the other nurseries.
