Chrysanthemums in Central/North Texas
Comments (1)Chrysanthemums respond to day length not temperatures. So when it suits them they will flower. The trouble is that when they expend all that energy in late spring flowering they may not have enough energy left to give a good display when fall arrives. I fiddled around for years pinching back mums to keep them from flowering in spring, but in the end cushion mums and florist mums really don't like our long growing season and it usually works out that you end up treating them as annuals or at most 2 year perennials. There are a couple of "mums" that do well in our long growing season. They are the taller daisy type mums. Two well known varieties are Sheffield Pink and Ryans Pink. I've grown Ryan's Pink mum for more years then I care to count and except for the fact that it needs to be supported (a cage around them at the beginning of the season will do) or cut back by about 1/3rd by mid July, they are a trouble free addition to the fall display....See MorePeonies in North Texas?
Comments (21)Okay, y'all are gonna love this. I drove out to that house again yesterday, talked to the owner and took some pictures. Unfortunately, the pictures will have to wait, as I'm on my way out of town for the day/night. BUT, they were HEALTHY and the elderly man said his wife moved them there from the next door neighbor's property years ago when the neighbor died, and he does absolutely NOTHING for them. They were on the east side of the house which blocks the afternoon sun, and I'm guessing they get a few hours of direct sun from maybe 10-2? They blooms were fading, but looked like they'd weathered all our recent storms well. I'll post the pictures as soon as I can, probably tomorrow afternoon. I haven't researched the climate here, and I've lived here less than a year, but it seems to be similar to DFW area, except a good bit more hot & dry....See MoreTexas Persimmons fruiting now!
Comments (4)Well, this was something I didn't know...that Texas had persimmons that ripen so much earlier than persimmons in the north (and different color). Too bad I never took the opportunity to taste one, when I lived in Texas and could have foraged:(...See MoreA couple flowering unknowns that can handle north Texas
Comments (9)When I searched on s. sarmentosum, one site mentioned that it is sometimes confused with Baby Tears <sedum> (s. album chloroticum) - which I then recalled was the name my benefactor called it. After looking at both, while not 100% certain yet, agree s. sarmentosum does seem a better match....See Moreroselee z8b S.W. Texas
