Growing Tomatoes

Hello, first time poster, long time lurker, finally got around to making an account.

Anyways, quick introduction, I live in Edmontonm, Canada and have a relatively short growing season in zone 3a. My last frost date is May 9th but I like to try and push my zone. I grow entirely in containers and, in fact, I have all my plants outside already. I got everything potted up last weekend. I am able to bring them in if it is going to frost, but the 2 week forecast showed no freezing temps so I went for it.

My garden consists of:

2 Cherokee Purple toms

2 Big Beef toms

2 Roma toms

2 Champion toms

3 Tumbler toms

1 Husky Cherry Red tom

1 Sweet Million tom

2 Jalapenos

1 Serrano

Red Onions

Peas (snap and canners)

Green Beans

Chard

Zuchini

Congratulations on getting it all in, and on the first post!

I'll keep my fingers crossed on the frost situation. I don't know if you get late spring winds, but if you do, watch out for the wind chill factor, which may not be forecast. I lost tomatoes on a night when the predicted low was only 40 degrees.

Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed for me!

I know that high winds can damage plants because they get battered around and dehydrated, but "wind chill" doesn't affect them. Wind chill only makes it feel colder to people because we lose heat faster in it; the true temperature isn't affected.

That said, if it looks like it may approach freezing any night, I will bring my babies into the garage and set up a little heater for them :)

Beautiful pictures. I planted 3 this year and they didn't come up. My friend said I should have dug them up and checked the tuber. Didn't. She is having her open house this week with 800 dahlias. She sells the tubers in the Spring and people can tell her which ones they like when they come and look and place an order in advance.

I have a daughter who is a single parent. She is finding it to be a real struggle. Maybe your DIL has got the message that being a single custodial parent is not a good option for either your granddaughter or herself. Your posting suggests that your DIL is involved as a visiting parent and that her relationship with yourself is reasonably civil given circumstances. Considering what I hear about couples who have split up, I would be thankful for small mercies. As to what to tell your granddaughter. I would tell her that her mommy loves her very much but that mommy cannot provide a good home and that you can. I think that it would be helpful to see if you can get/keep a good relationship as possible with your DIL. After all you are likely to be involved with her for a long time to come. You might have to work hard at being non-judgmental. If your son objects, tell him that it is for the sake of granddaughter. Ian

$70,000?!!! Joyful, that's a lot of money for a rental. I guess that's one reason I bought. Got tired of giving my landlord all that money and not being able to do what I wanted with the house. I saw my old rental house in the paper today. They've put in central air and recarpted...now asking $50 more a month than I was paying.

We’re building an outdoor fireplace that will be the focal point of a gabled roof patio cover. Dimensions of the fireplace are 5’ wide, 4’ deep and about 13’ tall. The gable will be 30’ wide, 20.6’ deep and about 13’ tall at the peak. This will face north from our ranch home. I’d love your input, please. Have any of you built such a gabled roof and fireplace, and if so, do you have pics to share? Did you use vinyl or wood planks for the ceiling? Did you mount a TV over the mantelpiece or someplace else beneath the roof? What do you wish you had done or had done differently?

Welcome, and next year why don't you grow the tomato variety Sophie's Choice, b'c its the only tomato variety I know of that's from Edmonton, Canada, and it's a good one. ( smile)
