Preventing tomato hornworm infestation

mary_md7

The last time I grew tomatoes in a pot on my deck (closest location to the kitchen), they became infested with hornworms. I came home from a trip late in the season to find both leaves and fruit dessimated and many hornworms (complete with wasp cocoons) on the plants.

I'd like to try again, but what can I do to prevent these creatures from infesting my plants? Do I have to use row covers all season? Bt? I want to use nontoxic methods since we (obviously) plan to eat these tomatoes.
