If you want color as well as an evergreen vine, I would go with a crossvine.

I have star jasmin in my front yard. It is evergreen and gives off very fragrant white flowers that lasts for several weeks. It doesn't have any problem with our ridiculous summer heat.

I picked mine up years ago at the natural gardener off of Old Bee Caves road. Or if you are a patient person I will have some rooted cuttings by late spring.

Hi Keith, I had star Jasmine back in CA, but didn't think it would grow here. So the soil isn't a problem? CA had lots of clay also.

I am just south of you in San Marcos. I would think that our soil is fairly close, so I don't think it would be a problem.

Creeping fig vine and ivy will attach to and grow up a stone wall. So will Cross vine

And by the way, welcome to Texas and our GW forum :-)

It's good to get advice and opinions from people in Texas who grow certain plants here on the forum, but you can also google a plant name and come up with all sorts of information. Click on 'images' and see lots of photos of it. I was so happy when I found that out! I love google!

You asked about a type of ivy that grows in Texas. English ivy grows very well -- a little too well in some people's opinion! LOL I don't grow it, but I think it is very pretty in my neighbors yards, especially how it looks hanging down out of oak trees.

Where in Austin are you, Or what kind of soil do you have. Confederate jasmine and cross vine are excellent choices. virginia creeper is another wall grabber. I can't stand english ivy. It can be so invasive here. So can virginia creeper, but at least it is a native. Coral Honey suckle is a good one too. passion flowers are good. if it is a protected area and you are in central Austin and you feel like gambling a little, I just love the aristolocia gigantum or elegantisima (sp?). If you are new to here I recommend "Native Texas Plants:landscaping Region By Region " by Sally and Andy Wasowski. Great aid to the Texas garden.
