I do have the Mexican Flame vine, and it is a fast grower that the hummers love. One of mine gets shade until late afternoon, and flowers its head off. My second gets mostly all day sun and does the same thing. Where my 2nd vine is I forget to water it OFTEN..and it never slows down.

I have a Mexican flame vine which is in full bloom right now, and this morning before the weather turned cloudy was absolutely covered with Monarch and Queen butterflies. I haven't given it a drop of water throughout these dry months and it is thriving. I love this vine.

I have a Mexican Flame Vine in a pot that I bring in for the winter. I don't think they are winter hardy in the DFW area. I wish they were, as mine doesn't bloom nearly enough under these conditions, but it does bloom for a while.

Queen's Wreath is one of those borderline hardy/not hardy plants in the DFW area. I haven't grown Queen's Wreath at my house, because my trumpet vine won't let me - won't give up the space, but we have one at work. It's growing on a fence in full sun sort of out in the open. It's on a chain link fence near a corner of the property, that divides our property from an apartment complex, with a concrete wall perpendicular to the chain link part. There is grass on the apartment side of the fence, and a mulched herb garden on our side, with a concrete parking lot on the opposite side of the concrete wall. It's kind of hard to describe. The reason I'm boring you with all this is because I can't decide if it's a protected spot or not. It may be shielded from the wind by the apartments and that wall, but it's also very much in the open being on the chain link fence. Anyway, this Queen's Wreath has come back the last few years, and is spectacular in the late summer. I think it might be worth a try. It will die to the ground in the winter.

Mexican Flame Vine and Queen's Wreath have very different looks. Both are good for nectaring insects, and the Queen's Wreath attracts hummers, too.

Mexican Flame vine. Can it be successfully planted now? Does it overwinter? I have all the things you mentioned, some sun, full sun and full shade so it sounds iteresting to me. I just dug up my recent English ivy which I was warned against and I decided I should not get something that invasive. So, would like to put the Mexican Flame in its place.

I have had Mexican Flame vine for a few years now. I doubt if it is winter hardy for you. The first year I had it I kept it in a pot and moved it into a very sheltered location in the winter. It died. I had taken cuttings so I did not loose all. If you do decide to put it into the ground just take cuttings in the fall so you will have a backup the following spring. It roots really easily. I did cuttings this fall that rooted within 2 weeks. I love the vine.

That's a good idea, Patsy. I haul my Mexican Flame vine indoors each winter, then back outside each spring. Maybe I'll find a good place in a protected spot to plant it in the ground this spring, and then take cuttings next fall. Of course, when plants are in a pot you need to take off a couple of zones, so something that's hardy to zone 8 in the ground is more like a zone 6 plant in a pot.

Lee, as you might have figured out by now, Mexican Flame vine is not winter hardy in the Dallas/Fortworth/zone8a area. I think it's supposed to be a zone 9 plant.

I have other z9 plants that have made it fine on my porch. It is sheltered on all sides by the house. The only side that is open is the west. Porch is 12 feet deep. I had it setting by the wall 12 feet from the open side. This is where I put the overflow from my greenhouse. I win some and loose some by doing this. This did prove to me that it is one of the more tender z9 plants. I have a queens wreath that has faithfully returned for several years that is planted outside. It is not mulched for protection and is on the northwest side of the house.

I'm hoping that somneone will see this and be able to help me even thought your postings are months old. I just found this group. Growing up in San Angelo, my Mother had a vine she called Queen's Wreath. I remember it as having broad crinkly leaves and small pink flowers. I've been trying to locate it for years. Is this what you call Queen's Wreath (Antigonon Leptopus? If not, what is it and can anyone tell me it's botanical name?

could someone tell me which insecticide is safe to use on this vine, something is eating the leaves. I saw a small light green worm on the vine.

Safest thing to use for caterpillars is BT (bacillus thuringiensis) spray. It's bacteria suspended in a liquid that you spray on the leaves...if the caterpillar bites a leaf it's infected and will die in 24 hours. So it probably takes a couple of days to get rid of them, but BT is considered organic by most and not as hard to handle as chemicals. Be advised that it does come with it's own warning and should certainly only be handled according to it's intructions. It comes ready mixed and in concentrate. I just buy the dollar plant spray bottle at Walmart and mix my own spray.

I love antiginon (Queen's Wreath or Coral Vine) as it was part of my childhood. It is not winter-hardy here in the Dallas area (Denton) and I keep mine in a big pot. I bring it in the garage in the winter and so far it has survived 3 years. The only problem with it is that it doesn't bloom until late august-september. I would rather have something that put on more of a show for longer in the summer. I keep it in the back yard to enjoy for myself but since it is in a pot I have put it in 3 different places in 3 years!!! When it does bloom it blooms a lot--and the pollinators LOVE it. Mine is always covered with bees and any other critter that likes nectar. As a matter of fact, after the first year I learned to put it somewhere where you didn't have to brush past it to go anywhere. They were so busy nectaring they didn't sting--but that many critters was intimidating right by the gate (LOL)
