That is a wonderful idea. Maybe it could be under a sub-heading under the Texas gardening forum or one out there all by itself. I think anyone who has ever grown any kind of vegetable here in Texas or those who want to start a veggie garden would benefit from a separate forum like this. Uh . . . Garden Web Webmaster? Are you reading this?

Count me in! I've been stalking this forum for 3 years trying to figure out when to plant my veggies here after moving from Canada...I'm still working on it :)

Sounds like fun to me. I would like to have another forum to check/read. We do have to remember that its a long way from north to south and east to west here in Texas. Location will make a big difference in what works and what won't.

Don't forget about the County Extension Service Office in your County. They have lots of info on what plants work well in each county, when to plant etc. Not that their information is enough, you still need personal knowledge of someone who actually gardens in your area.

I sent an email to "GardenWeb". Found a contact us spot on their home page. I guess we'll see what happens from here. Anybody have other suggestions on how to get the ball rolling?

Although we tend to talk more about landscape and ornamentals here, there have been plenty of posts in the past about herbs and veggies.

Yes, great idea! I sometimes visit the tomato forum or the general veg forum, but these don't always meet a Texan's needs.

I think this is a GREAT idea. I just spent the entire weekend combing through veggie seed catalogs trying to decide on varieties. They rarely list information on regional growing. It's maddening.

If you do searches on the internet you can find lots of info. But generally, what I end up doing is going to nurseries and seeing what they carry. When it comes to veggies, they tend to carry what will grow here - roughly at the correct time to plant it.

Commonsense Vegetable Gardening for the South by William D. Adams

Check it out on Amazon. I bought my copy used.

I grew up on a farm in Illinois, lived and gardened for 10 years in Alaska, then moved to Houston and was totally lost for how to garden for 4 years before moving to the UK in 2006. This book not only tells you what to plant when, but lists specific varieties, pests, etc, in chart form.

When I had problems with powdery mildew on zucchini, and our fellow Texas Forum Gardenweb members couldn't help, I e-mailed the author directly and he was able to provide a few more varieties to try that might perform even better. My attitude about this forum, is that, if all the combined experience of these people can't help, than you'll probably have to figure it out yourself. This is one of the most active, receptive forums here at Gardenweb, and it will be a tough act to follow if a separate forum is formed!

I'll be back as a regular soon. It's official: we're moving back to Houston over spring break. See you in March!

I would tend to agree with Bobbi P. If you use this forum for veggies (as many do but often seasonally) we still can glean info and help each other.

The challenges of having such a big state and so many variables of soils and freeze times already makes sharing specific info somewhat dicey except for the forum members in that area. I can't plant a tomato at the same time as Houston or Dallas or El Paso or even San Antonio (which is less than 50 miles away). It doesn't mean that I can't learn and or share ideas and experiences that others can use or I can try for myself.
Life as is in All Gardening is about the experience and experiments that we do and learn from individually as well as collectively.
Lets talk veggies or ...or....or... Lets share this is the Texas Forum after all. The best, the friendliest and last but not least the best chance we still have right now to learn from each other. If a veggie forum just for Texas is possible then lets show GardenWeb we need it by having no room for any other discussions. I am just too eclectic myself to stick to an edible or an ornamental annual, perennial, tree, fern or any other plant that I may have an interest in at any given time of year. This is just MHO of course and your welcome to yours.

I agree with all of that. But, I've often wondered if the reason we don't see a lot of activity regarding vegetables is because the tex vegie gardeners may not visit here since most of our threads are about ornamentals. I have noticed an increase in veg threads lately, so maybe this thread will have served it's purpose... to encourage more people to talk about them. That's all I personally would like to see. It could be that there just aren't many TX veg gardeners out there period. Whatever the case, I enjoy this forum as much as everyone else. Don't think otherwise. I just get tired of the veg forum because I'm often reading about things in upstate New York, say, or New Hampshire, etc. I'd much prefer to hear about things here in TX even if it is from someone in a different area than I am.

Well, I gave up on veggies here at my house. Just not enough sun for 'em here. Maybe once we get moved into the next one I'll consider planting veggies again.
I do remember lots of veggie talk here in the past, not so much lately though.

Yes please... I need all the help I can get! I'd love a Texas Veggie forum. I'm planting this week, and it's my first Texas garden- so I'm nervous that all the time I put into the seedlings will be for nothing. Wish me luck!

I must be in the minority ,I don't want a tx veg forum. I prefer to post here , with a clear title on the post. If someone does not want to read a post about vegs they don't click on it. I sort of like reading about gardening up North. Especially stuff like "wait 2 weeks after the ground thaws"... I love texas. I don't love mosquitos , heat, humidity, constant rain, pollution ,and houston traffic so much. Oh dang I left out fire ants!!!

have found this thread over the search in this forum. I still live in Germany but will be moving to Dallas soon.
I can´t wait to start my yard blooming. I´ve always loved mediterranean plants and also have some of them, but only in pots and I have to carry them inside for 5 to 6 months in Germany.

What I am looking for now:
A forum or information sites about plants in North Texas. What can I plant outside without to carry pots inside.

And of course also a veg forum would be really interesting for me.
Did it ever start somewhere???

Could you please provide lots of links and information to me here, where I can get into Texas gardening.

Yeah a Texas veggie forum would be nice to have. I'm tired of it being implied that I have no idea what I'm doing by people at the other forum. This state is big enough to be divided into 5 states. None of the 6 major cities have the same soil types or the same weather patterns. We aren't classed as southern and we're not southwest either. We need to discuss veggie problems with other folks that have gardened in the same area and get info from them.

You know, in the regular vegetable gardening forums, "southern gardening", certainly for vegetables, is presumed to be a complete oddity, and perhaps non-existent. That is, people carry on as if the ground is always frozen in winter and summer plants can get set out in May and June. Why, it couldn't be any other way! Northern prejudice is deeply seated.
