How you use your worms

Hi everyone...I've been reading your posts about vermicomposting but am not sure when and how you actually put these worms to use.

Do you grow these for selling as fishing worms or to put them in the garden and turn the soil under? If so...how often do you need a new supply of them?

How fast do they multiply?
Do they multiply in the winter months as well?

When I read about people growing them indoors, I wondered why we need to protect them that way and why would someone ever need that many worms?

Do worms mainly aerate the soil for easier planting or do they nourish the soil as well?

Are these earthworms or a special kind of worm? Can we raise regular earthworms and get the same benefits?

Thanks for helping me understand the purpose for going to so much trouble to raise worms.

Many of us raise worms because it is fun and exciting. :-)

If so...how often do you need a new supply of them?" Most of us use these worms to compost our kitchen produce waste. Think carrot tops and potato peels. To send those items to the garbage dump or grind into drinking water appears to us a waste of resources and almost sinful. Not as many as one might think uses their worms primarily for fishing. Just as many would maybe purchase worms for fishing as their worms are their pets. We get attached to them. Hardly any of us put the worms into the garden soil. Our worms are red wigglers which eat compost and are different than the worms that are in garden soil. Our worms would die quickly in the garden. Some of our worms are other varieties. Ideally, if we are doing it right, we never again have to purchase or gather worms and indeed will have a large surplus of worms to share.

"How fast do they multiply?" For some vermicomposers very fast. For others, cough me cough, very slowly. Some of us here no longer have worms but have valuable information to share with new and experienced wormers.

"Do they multiply in the winter months as well?" Not as fast as in warmer months. Some vermicomposters use simple or Herculean methods to warm up their little buddies.

Like rabbits, and krill everything likes to eat worms. A mess or warms is a wondrous thing to behold. I just do not like walking through 3 feet of snow and ice in a blizzard, up hill both ways, just to empty my kitchen scraps in the outdoor compost heap.

"Do worms mainly aerate the soil for easier planting or do they nourish the soil as well?" That is the type of worm that likes to live in soil. Ours live above it, usually in horse poop or vegetable scraps.

Eisenia fetida aka redworm, brandling worm, panfish worm, trout worm, tiger worm. They are special to me. You need not purchase them there are probably some very near to you. You just need to know where to look.

I have worked with both worm castings and worm tea for years now and am blown away again and again by the amazing impact they have when added to the soil as soil conditioners and plant food! Our Worm tea is produced when worm castings are mixed with water and molasses and brewed for 24 hours. The molasses will serve as a food source for beneficial microorganisms that are part of worm castings. How Often Do You Harvest Your Worm Compost?

Okay, so here's the whole procedure... I carry the totes out into the sunshine and let it sit for an hour or so (allowing the surface to heat up and dry out enough that the majority of the worms are inclined to go deeper) then I begin by scraping about a 1-2" layer off the top of each bin and putting that into the screened frame I have sitting on top of the wheel barrow. I then shift the castings around back and forth until most of what's going to pass through the 1/4" screen has done so... by then maybe 20-30 minutes has elapsed and I'm back to the first bin and I simply repeat the process perhaps another 7, 8, or 9 times to the point where I begin to run into much larger populations of escaping worms. Whenever the wheel barrow gets near filled I go dump it in the garden... this happens like three times for 90 gallons. Then I stop... put the bins back in the shade and add 4-6" of coco coir and top it with shredded paper and put the lids back on. Then I go inside and collapse for a few. That's the whole process... it takes up a goodly part of my day. I'll estimate I "lose" maybe 5-10% or so of the worm bin population to the garden in the process... a win-win for those worms and the garden plants wouldn't you think? Its only a broad guesstimate mind you but I likely have 4-5 lbs of worms in each bin to start with so whatever is lost is going to be good for the remaining population in their reduced post-harvest bedding volume and I assume they are to be quickly replaced... Think about this... I'll grab out a gob on occasion just to feed to my koi (if you dig around in a bin you can usually find a ball of pure worms without getting all the castings in-between, those are the ones I scoop up to feed to the fish... I limit it to usually no more than a hundred or so per feeding). I don't sweat the losses since each bin is so large and densely populated that their numbers are easily buffered by littler ones to absorb those losses. Remember because population growth is exponential its only the percentage of loss that one should focus on and not the actual count of individual worms lost in the process.

So I wondering if it might be possible that the EARTH WORMS would be BREEDING with the RED WRIGGLERS...? Nope. There is no such thing as hybrid worms. It is physically impossible for worms of different species to copulate - the alignment of necessary parts is all wrong. (I suddenly feel like I'm having the birds and bees talk with Abbey! - lol) However, it is possible that you've introduced some red wigglers into your heap and they've grown well in the wild.

See May that's what I mean. .its sometimes h ard to know because slipperiness is a factor that the water was conditioned enough to hold dirt ect in suspension but it doesn't mean that enough was added for there to be enough enzymes and bleaches to do their job expecially if the person has soft water, so sometimes 1/8'th of a cup in a top loader with soft water may give you slippery water, but it may also not give enough enzymes to break down dirt and stains. I guess it all depends on water chemistry and trial and error, of course along with type of chemicals and water temp..everything would have to be in balance. This isn't something that was a concern to me until I actually thought about it lol. I used to just dump an amount of detergent in, feel the water and determine by the slipperiness until it was brought to my attention that just because the water is slippy does not mean I added enough detergent. .it just means I added enough to condition the water.lol... Yes Poppy my clothes are clean so I must be adding enough detergent lol..I know never to follow the manufactures amounts, yep they want to sell. Thank you both for responding
