What's your favorite non-red beefstake tasting tomato?
Comments (25)I didn't have any way to get a cattle panel last year. I drooled and drooled and tried to find a better way to grow indeterminates than bowing them to the ground after they grew out of a standard tomato cage so they couldn't be seen, (but did just that for 3 or 4 plants)and found none. I actually take that back. I grew 2 of them up into my orange tree and that worked well. :-) You did send me the list. AND I bought a truck. I'm going to head out to the supply house for a cattle panel in the next couple weeks and I CANNOT wait. I still won't be able to grow many because the area that I will be able to put the cattle panel that won't be seen (the raised bed is in a raised area of the yard) is against the fence and doesn't get as much sunlight. So I'm not sure that they will grow as well, but I am certainly willing to try. I started 3 Big rainbow, 3 beefsteaks, 2 Cherokee Purple this weekend. I'll plant more once I get the panel in and see how many I can really fit. I started all my determinates for the early season trial last weekend, too. I don't normally care for cherry tomatoes but if it truly has a tomato taste and not overly sweet I'll be on the lookout. I have a ton of cherry seeds I'm willing to share if anyone wants some. :-) The f4 I've been saving that started as a sungold was sweet but it's lost most that now. :-)...See MoreWhat are your favorite tomato varieties?
Comments (11)Totally Tomatoes doesnÂt have Marianna's Peace. If youÂre interested in that one, which is a very fine tomato, try these sources. They have a lot of other great varieties too. Marianna's Heirlooms http://www.mariseeds.com/2005catalog/pinks.html Sand Hill Preservation Center http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/Seeds.htm note -- this is a small 1 or 2 person operation, so it might take a while to get your order. If you need something right now, order it from somewhere else. It is however a very good reliable source, and they do have a lot of good varieties that are hard to find anywhere else. Tomato Growers Supply http://www.tomatogrowers.com/beefsteaks2.htm Victory Seeds http://www.victoryseeds.com/catalog/vegetable/tomato/tomato_pink.html Your question about good early varieties comes up regularly on the "Growing Tomatoes" forum. You can find lots of good suggestions by trying keywords such as 'early' in the search feature of that forum. There is an active thread there right now called "Favorite Early tomato?" Here is a link that might be useful: Favorite Early tomato?...See MoreWhat is your favorite cherry tomato?
Comments (2)I love cherry tomatoes! I try one or two new ones each year, and if they didn't take so long to pick I'd consider growing a garden of only cherry tomatoes. So far my favorites are Black Cherry -- great taste, productive but I like them so much I don't usually have many to share! Tommy Toe -- very prolific and my favorite red; tastes great at different stages of ripeness, I liked it better than any other red *tomatoes* I grew at the same time, and it produced until the first big frost (but different websites call it an Ozark heirloom and an Australian heirloom!) Galina's and Sun Sugar -- I grew both of these one year, and the taste was very close; sweet and prolific, and I like them better than Sungold (I've been growing Sungold in alternate years; I miss the fruitiness when I'm not growing it, but when I have a surfeit of Sungolds, I get tired of them and begin to detect an "off" taste) This year I've finally tried wintersowing outdoors and it works! so I'm planning to save lots of seeds. I'm growing Black Cherry, Camp Joy, Sun Sugar, a red grape, and (if it recuperates from being out in the cold one night without protection, or if I can find a replacement) Koralik....See MoreWhat's your favorite cherry tomato?
Comments (14)I've been considering what cherry tomatoes to grow next season the bulk of my plants are usually pastes and larger sized tomatoes. There has to be cherry tomatoes for balance though so from this thread (and Dr. Carolyn's book) I think Galina and Dr. Carolyn will be in my garden next year. I saw a black cherry in one of the threads here at Garden Web and I'm curious about it's taste as it looks fantastic....See Morecatman529
