What is your favorite cherry tomato?

I love Matt's wild cherry as my favorite. My five year old daughter loves Sunsugars or Sungolds. I agree with her they are very tasty and extremely sweet, but I love the real tomatoey taste of Matt's Wild Cherry. What are you guys favorite cherry?

I love cherry tomatoes! I try one or two new ones each year, and if they didn't take so long to pick I'd consider growing a garden of only cherry tomatoes. So far my favorites are

Black Cherry -- great taste, productive but I like them so much I don't usually have many to share!

Tommy Toe -- very prolific and my favorite red; tastes great at different stages of ripeness, I liked it better than any other red *tomatoes* I grew at the same time, and it produced until the first big frost (but different websites call it an Ozark heirloom and an Australian heirloom!)

Galina's and Sun Sugar -- I grew both of these one year, and the taste was very close; sweet and prolific, and I like them better than Sungold (I've been growing Sungold in alternate years; I miss the fruitiness when I'm not growing it, but when I have a surfeit of Sungolds, I get tired of them and begin to detect an "off" taste)

This year I've finally tried wintersowing outdoors and it works! so I'm planning to save lots of seeds. I'm growing Black Cherry, Camp Joy, Sun Sugar, a red grape, and (if it recuperates from being out in the cold one night without protection, or if I can find a replacement) Koralik.

Matt's Wild Cherry is very flavorful, almost like a SweetTart. The fruits are very small, and they get a little split as soon as you pull the stem off, so it may be best for grazing while working in the garden. Also, it seems more prone to self-sowing. If you pick a special place to plant it the first time, you may not have to plant it again for years. Tommy Toe is a good sized cherry that has a good old fashioned tomato flavor, with good productivity. Blondkopfchen is highly prolific with sweet-tart flavor. It is so rampant, though, that it is a bully to its neighbors. I haven't tried any that you mentioned.

I grew Cosmonaut Volkov, and they did not split or have bad skin for the most part. I got a decent harvest from them, even though the vines have had some kind of fungus or bacterial spot on the leaves starting in early September. If I had done a better job of spacing my garden and supporting the tomatoes (they sort of grew all together like a thicket), or perhaps had sprayed some fungus preventative on them, they would have done even better I'm sure. They also taste very good in our opinion, but we have not eaten a lot of heirlooms, so the connoisseurs might disagree. Siletz came up early, the fruit were big, and the plants rather hardy. They are determinate, and are one of the parthenogenic varieties (blossoms need not pollinate to set fruit) developed at Oregon State decades ago. I would say that their taste does not compare with the more well-known heirloom types (or Volkov), but they are still better than Safeway tomatoes ;), and very easy to grow for such a big fruited tomato. Next year I am think about trying Thessaloniki, Anna Russian, Fireball or New Yorker, maybe Eva's Purple Ball or Persimmon (which may be too late-season for around here) and some others already mentioned. Has anyone grown these in the Seattle area?

If it were me I think I'd look at the links Dave gave, b'c the question about cherry tomatoes has been asked many many times. And I know I've posted about cherry tomatoes many times here in most of those threads, but there are always new ones to consider so I'll name just two new red ones that I like. Durmitor, from Serbia (seeds at Victory Seeds) Nano Ciliega, from Italy (seeds from Tania) If you don't know about Tania's superb tomato data base I'll put the link below. If you know the name of a variety click on shortcuts at the top, then use the alphabetical method of finding the page for that variety, which has basic traits, opinions of others, and most with pictures as wekk as seed sources, when available. She features over 4,000 varieties and you can also choose to look at thelink, on the first page, for JUST cherry tomatoes. I think we have all asked your question at one time. I think many of us continue our search for a 50 day to ripe, one slice fills a sandwich, excellent tasting and tremendously productive variety. If we ever found that, (Which I doubt we will) we'd go looking for an even better one with a 40 day from seed to ripe. LOL The fun is in the quest. :) I might add that some years early varieties for me aren't. They ripen same time as Brandywine that particular year. That's another reason I gave up on them. But some years yes the early WAS early. And that beats store bought. But getting older made me realize two weeks ain't a big deal. So now I don't devote too much precious garden space to earlies. The two best tasting earlies I ever grew were: Early Wonder Matina Well at least they are listed as earlies. They really weren't here. Stupice and Kotlas are almost the same plant and have ALWAYS been early. But too small and not enough taste for me. 4th of July indeed was early and very productive but crappy taste and again too small. Siletz, Glacier, Siberia, Arctic Plenty, Early Girl, Bush Early Girl...the worst tasting tomatoes I ever tried. I'm sure I'll be tempted to try more in the future. Catalog descriptions never fail to reel me in. But Early and Great Taste have never happened yet...:)
