What is your favorite way to preserve Early Girl tomatoes?
Comments (6)Variety doesn't make any difference as the same methods apply to all varieties. So it depends on how you would use them the most. Canned plain tomatoes can be used for any number of recipes so the instructions for canning crushed tomatoes (linked below) is one of the most popular methods. If you'd use more tomato sauce than whole or chopped tomatoes then you can turn any tomato into sauce and using anything other than Romas will deliver a better tasting sauce. Most use a mixture of many different varieties to make sauce for either canning or freezing as it will deliver a far superior flavored sauce. Canning salsa is probably the next most popular method but it can be tricky since it also includes low acid ingredients so only tested and approved recipes can be used for it. Of course you can also freeze them plain and use them for cooking if you don't want to get into canning. Check out all the canning and freezing instructions for them at NCHFP Hope this helps. Comments (17)Stupice has good taste and is very early. They were starting to flower in MAY for goodness sakes, just a few weeks after I planted them. And I had ripe tomatoes by mid-July. Surprisingly my second plant to produce a ripe fruit was Black Krim, by the end of July. I also grew Siberian which is another early variety, but I didn't get the seedling until the end of June so I can't say how early it would have been if I would have planted it when I should have. It had good taste, too. I'm going to try starting them from saved seeds this year and compare them against the Stupice. Mike...See Morewhat's your favorite tomato
Comments (20)When you say 25-40 seeds, do you mean packs of seeds or actually seeds? Just wondering. I went to the site but she doesnt list what seeds you get for what package. I was interested in this package Really Rainbow Salad Mix Even kids will love helping make the salads at your house when you bring them a basket of this colorful collection to toss into their creations. Packet contains equal amounts of many of the colored cherries in this catalog. #RR.............................................................................................30 seeds $3.00 but I dont know where to get a list of what is in it. does she mean only tomatoes or does that include radishes, carrots and lettuce? Comments (25)I am growing Black Krim , a Russian heirloom tomato. Does that count?I love them. They are the best tasting of all of the ones that I am growing this year. They would have given me more tomatoes if I had done a deep drip on them, but I thought all the rain was enough. We did not get as much rain as other people. My plants are in a raised bed and they still had blossom drop . I am now getting tons of fruit forming now that I am doing a deep drip watering. Shame on me. The Carmellos are the tops. They were the tomato that I took a chance on and it is a hybrid from France and it is the largest plant (even though it was planted last), and has the most fruits and was not as touchy as the others. the Phoenix has not made one fruit yet so it is the pits....See Morenaplesgardener
