Caring for, packaging castings

Hi,

This past summer I was selling some vermicast at a farmer's market. I made cute little muslin bags and tied them with hemp cord. I was harvesting the castings by taking out the worms and eggs and then sifting it through a screen. I let it dry out in the sun to sift it, but it still stayed moist. I noticed after time that a cup of castings in a bag would shrink as the moisture left.

Someone who does large scale vermicasting asked me how I prepared my castings and I told her. She said that I needed to add some honey or molasses to my castings and then let them dry. I did this. I let them dry and then I sifted them through a screen. Well now they are drier than my other ones. Very dry, dusty even.

I'm just curious about why I need to add sweetner and whether it's ok for the castings to be that dry. I thought they were supposed to stay moist. I will eventually speak with this woman again but wanted to run it past vermicasters here.

thanks
