It RAINED. It actually poured ....

It overflowed the rain gutters ...

Sport, the poodle dog, was so happy he ran around trying to catch rain drops ...

His feet aren't even touching the ground here ...

Sorry guys, this is not me ... LOL. Bob put on my straw hat to rescue the neighbor's recycle bins that were floating off down the street ...

And this folks -- is how you do the [half] nekkid turtle dance ... :-)

Don't want to make anybody feel bad that didn't get any rain, but the intention is to increase your faith that IT IS POSSIBLE!!!! YEA!

I've had a migration of snow fleas over the last couple weeks because of the heavy rains forcing them out of the soil. They look like microscopic tiny fleas ranging from bluish-to-gray-to-blackish in color. Essentially they're harmless but they will, over time find a way into your house/garage and they go from being a nuisance to being outright gross. Any pesticide you choose to kill them will also kill out the plethora of other beneficials in your yard as well, including the earthworms. Ultimately they're a "good thing" as they consume decaying organic matter and convert it into nutrients more readily available for your turf and other flora in the yard. Under normal circumstances you'd have never known they were there because they tend to stay underground for months/years and only surface when migrating to a new locale - typically only several feet - where they can start the process all over again. However with the rains we've been seeing in our area they've been forced out of their homes and they've been on the sides of my house and on my patios for the last two weeks. As it warms up they'll go deeper and deeper and we'll be done with them but I definitely feel your pain in terms of "grossness", lol... Damn buggers managed to get into my garage made their way to my greenhouse because of the fluorescent lighting I use. grrr...

It was very interesting to learn of the pruning suggestions for RdR! I had completely forgotten that this spring I had given it a very hard pruning. This spring, the bush was about 3' tall with a lot of short canes coming up vertically through the middle of the plant. Further, it was extremely twiggy with a lot of little branches very tightly intertwined. I knew it was time for a major pruning and did just that, reducing the vertical canes to 3 or 4 and getting rid of the twiggy growth completely. Right now the bush looks great, including the foliage which is remarkably clean and the shape which is rounded and full at about 3'. I still think that the rain has contributed to the constant bloom this summer.

The other day, I thought we might get rain here in BKF. There was a long stream of alto-cumulus coming in from the Pacific Coast and it suggested maybe there was a cyclone or the Pineapple Express ready to push rain inland. But no, what we have here is a fire in Santa Barbara County that has burned so much forest that there is a stream of smoke collecting water particals in the high atmosphere. It reddens the sky and makes the sun look like an orange hidden in a pall. Today everything is orange hued and for some reason, I have a slight head-ache from being out in it. It's really wierd to go out in orange light and see the reflection of an orange ball in the windows of cars. It does make a nice sun shade for the plants, but I think we here in this part of California would rather have rain, especially those fighting that fire. It's eerie.

I would pass on a shower without a handheld and most importantly grab bars. Grab bars can not be added after the fact without difficulty because they need to be mounted to studs. Although not a deal breaker, I would assume that a shower with a thermostatic valve was higher end than one with a pressure balance valve and that other aspects of the shower build also reflected this. I know that people seem to think rain head showers are the cat's pajamas as least based on shows like House Hunters but I think they make sense only in showers where they are an option and not the only shower head so ideally there would be regular, handheld and then a rain head - not that I want a rain head but so long as it had the components I wanted, I wouldn't care if it existed :-).

My rain guage shows we got 9/10 of an inch. It seemed like more. That brings the total up to about 3 1/2 inches since January. There's a chance we may get more.

I hope it was enough to help bring the level of the aquifer up. A lot of water was flowing down our street due to so many paved areas uphill, but what happens to it? Most of it gathers in creek beds (that's where the water on our street was heading), joins rivers and flows out to the sea. There should be a way to slow down the flow and let it sink in. And there is.

Bamburger Ranch has done a lot of hands on research in that area. By clearing out 'cedar' trees and planting native grasses, etc. on overgrazed dry land, creeks flowed that hadn't flowed for 50 or more years.

Read about it when you have a few minutes, and go visit if you ever get the chance.

Bob is the epitome of Mr. Nice Guy, as well as a fun and funny guy. He's always doing things for people; not just little things but BIG things -- building houses, fences, changing neighbor's door knobs, moving their furniture, installing their fans, toilets, and light fixtures; plus he's a great counselor when that's needed, and on and on. And his career before retirement was a desk job.

His latest little thing was pushing a lady's car that ran out of gas on HEBs parking lot. I thought he pushed it with HIS car. No, he pushed it by hand! Seventy five years old and he's pushing a car!!! He said it was only a few hundred feet over to the gas pumps, but really -- what a guy. We have a good life.

Do your best, RC. Just do your best. If you can't emulate Sport then you'll have to beat Bob's performance (if that is possible..) A bigger and pinker hat, perhaps?...

Roselee, You and your DH are lucky to have eachother. My DH is a total sweetheart too. It's hard when other women are venting about thier DH and I have to resort to rehashing my ex-husband's stuff. Sometimes I can't believe how lucky I got :)
