Nice shots. Everything looks healthy. I remember my sweetheart lychee looking like that once! Once...long ago.

thanks for the update. Someday, maybe, if I'm lucky, my Hak Ip lychee might look like that, if I (or it) lives long enough. Do you have a large yard or just very well placed trees?

Not enough information Kumquat to give the best answer here - a photo of the tree and fruit and the location of the tree would help. (Does your son live in North Florida too?) A few things to consider: Persimmons normally do have a June drop that can continue into early July, and the fruitlets often discolor prior to falling, though they usually turn brown rather than black. Your son may ask the neighbors whether the tree usually produces edible fruit in previous years. Knowing whether the tree is an Asian or an American persimmon can make a difference in determining what's going on and what to do about it. You say it's a big tree - those over 30 feet tall are usually American persimmons. The leaves of the two species are different and can fairly easily distinguish between them - you can compare the leaves to on-line photos to make the ID. Abnormal fruit drop may be from too much or too little water, excessive nitrogen applications, excessive heat, lack of pollination (in certain varieties)and disease. Leaf discoloration (especially blackening), disfigurement or loss together with fruit drop suggests an infectious process.

Ah. Not so great. The reason your tree is aborting flowers and small fruits is because is is severely undernourished. Over, very overwatered and suffering from Phytophthora, causing root rot and lack of nutrient uptake. Check how moist the soil is 18 to 24 inches down, not the "crusty" surface. If it is still wet, don't water. Assess your soil moisture first. If it could stand to be watered, water some, then apply a high quality citrus fertilizer with an NPK ratio as close to 5:1:3 as you can find, along with the full compliment of micronutrients (Magnesium, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, Manganese.) Then, fertilize again in 2 months. You should be fertilizing 4 times a year during the growing season. Patty S.

Gary, the longan is one fruit I did not much care for while in Thailand. They were quite bland and more "musky"...to me. Of course my wife and mother-in-law thought I was crazy. I've tasted Eggo's and his was more sweet than what I've had in Thailand. As for the humidity in Thailand? It's been awfully humid everywhere I've been. Not real sure about the cooler northern regions but have to imagine it's humid everywhere. So I too believe that they shouldn't be affected by humidity or they wouldn't be growing as well as they do in Florida. Humidity was one of my concerns for my lychee but that can't be either. The tree once thrived in the humidity. It still seems to be on the decline by-the-way. Real bummer. I may just dig it out and put it in a container and see what happens. If anyone thinks of a magic bullet, please let me know! Going to try a compost tea today or does anyone believe I should put it in a container as soon as possible?

Thanks Konrad! I wish it was a golden delicious as that is one of my favorites. We often go to a nearby U-pick orchard in fall only for their golden delicious as somehow I never got around to planting one in my orchard. My chip budding attempt with golden delicious also failed. I do like golden delicious for cooking (cut the sugar in 1/2 on any recipe used). They make a really great pie. My unknown apple ripens before our local golden delicious, does not turn a solid yellow and is more round than conical in shape. Since it does not color well and is not good cooked, I assume it is some heirloom variety not golden delicious. My brother in law got this tree from a nearby orchard that some doctor started as he thought he would grow organic apples as a hobby. When that failed and the land sold, the developer sold some of the young fruit trees as 2"BB for $70. The price was right so 5 trees were purchased and planted. However the developer had no records as to what variety was in each row so they were sold as "unknown varieties". I have managed to I.D. the Bartlett pear, Summercrisp pear, Red Delicious, and Northern Spy but no such luck on this unknown apple. It seems it will remain a mystery apple.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, I'll pass it on to my trees, maybe it'll spur them further before the cool months take hold.

Ethan, I have an acre and a half, have over 120 varieties, but still have a decent amount of room left, but not much well drained room. If all my remaining trees ever get to size I might have less room than I think. I did leave quite a bit of space between trees hoping for them to get large.

Hi Scott, I wish I had something intelligent to say about my canistel, you must have just had bad luck with yours somehow. Mine's 7 or 8', not sure if that'll be big enough next year to hold fruit or not. My Ross Sapote is doing pretty good, but will be a couple years or more until fruit.

Gary I moved mine to a better spot (I hope) about two months ago and it seems to be flushing...though it's still about 2'. Did you get yours at Excalibur and was it a Trompo (formerly 9681) or Bruce?

Hey Scott, I thought I got mine the same year as you, was it two years ago? It was from Excalibur. They're calling it Trompo now? I remember Richard saying it was big and tasted good, that's all I know about it.

Found out yesterday my Ross Sapote broke in half from the high winds we've been having. I hope it sprouts from the trunk, but we'll see!

I decided to try to save my Ross Sapote, which was broke and leaning to the ground, but still had some cambium layer connected. I staked it and taped up the break. Since all the leaves still look green, who knows? Anyone else succeed in such a fashion?

My Ross Sapote did finally break completely in half. I do see green bumps emerging above the graft near the break though.
